Best book for learning how to read patterns and how to create different designs intentionally when knitting. There’s twelve squares, each square clearly teaching a new skill. And, you can access her videos on line if you need more help.I finally can make intentional, decorative holes in my knitting. I’ve learned how easy a cable stitch is to knit.

I am not exactly a beginning knitter but sometimes am reluctant to try new stitches. This books is great! I have had a taste of knitting from a chart. At the end of the book, you can use the squares or “blocks” for pillows or a small throw.

This really is helping to teach me to knit. The text is clear and easy to follow. There are online video lessons to accompany the book. It is not a large book. But it is very well thought out and the patterns work perfectly.

I had just learned how to knit, and I was looking for something that would show me what all those knit instructions mean, so I could build my confidence before tackling a sweater pattern. It starts off with doing a straight forward knit and purl pattern, then how to read a graph pattern. I am on the third block and I have learned how to do turn work, and how to drop (k2tog, p3tog) and add stitches (yo). The author has a web page with videos of how to do the stitches. The camera angle to see how to work the stitch is good, making it easy to follow along. The blocks are nice. The are large enough that I can see the pattern, and get a feel of the techniques. They are also small enough that I can complete one in a week (8-10 hours?). I can also carry the one block with me when I have to fly or wait somewhere. I am looking forward to putting them all together to make a nice throw for my living room.

I was initially hesitant to pay so much for a booklet (not a full hardcover book), but now that I'm halfway through the blocks (I've finished 1-6) I thought I would write a review. I consider myself an advanced beginner-intermediate knitter. I can make a long sleeve V-neck sweater, use double pointed needles to make hats in the round, things like that. I don't really do fancy stitches. I bought this as a learning course to improve my knitting and to start to feel comfortable adding some interesting stitches to my knitting. I found the directions very clear and had no trouble following them. Block No. 3 with the "bobbles" I did find confusing, so I went on-line and watched the video and the video was great. Very clear and I had no trouble making the bobbles. I highly recommend this booklet. If you consider the cost of taking a class, it is very reasonable. So far I have only watched the one video, but I'm sure the other videos are clear as well. I'll also mention I had no idea how easy cables are. A block is just the right size to get enough practice to feel comfortable, but not so big as to be overwhelming. I'm very pleased.

This is a great tool for those of us who need video as well as written instructions. Her website is FULL of helpful videos on how to do techniques. She introduces the videos you need ONLY for the block you are working on at the time. The techniques are kind of advanced. I am a beginner knitter and I am having a hard time on block 3 (the idea is you work on the blocks in order, to build your skill level). But, I believe in her way of instruction and will continue to work through the book. If you DON'T want to keep working on your skills in a semi-advanced way, you should not get this book.

As an advanced-beginner knitter, I wanted to learn some new skills before tackling an intermediate-level project. Completing the squares in this book gave me the confidence I needed. I learned to knit cables, bobbles, and how to knit from a chart. And, I ended up with a nice little sampler baby blanket. I recommend this book for beginner and advanced-beginner knitters.
