I teach first aid to scouts, and this handy burn simulation has been very successful. Seeing something realistic helps the kids focus on the seriousness of third degree burns and they take the training a bit more seriously with a visual like this. When they don’t pass out, which has nearly happened a few times. It is also easy to apply and re-use in our training scenarios (ie a simulated car crash victim) without taking a long time to apply unlike makeup. I should get more of these for other situations like bites, cuts, and lesser burns.

This is a simulated wound that mimics in a very realistic way the appearance of a third degree burn. The material is silicone that is tinted a Caucasian flesh color at the base layer with a top layer that is darker red and brown/black to simulate a burn of the epidermis and dermis layers. This is the type of "moulage" appliance that we need in a medical school to do makeup on the "patient" so that students can practice their wound care skills. You could try to make this simulated wound with silicone material that is sold by professional makeup companies. But note that besides the silicone and pigment materials, it takes time and some artistic talent to make it look real. I showed this to my boss who is a surgeon and he said it is a credible burn wound. It is thicker than the wounds that I have made from silicone materials, but it is still thin enough to wrap around an arm or leg. The thickness just means that it will be easy to peel off and re-use it (after cleaning). If you don't have the time or inclination to make your own, this is a realistic burn wound that you can buy.
