Product Description

Canon CANOSCAN 8400F 3200X6400 DPI FLATBED SCANNER

From the Manufacturer

The feature-rich CanoScan 8400F Color Image Scanner lets you produce superb high-speed scans of a wide range of materials. Now, you can easily scan valuable photos, important documents, books, old slides and even medium-format film. Your results? A spectacular 3,200 x 6,400 color dpi resolution (maximum) and 48-bit color depth, for over 281 trillion possible colors.

Thanks to its high-end image processor and USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface, this powerful scanner can provide super-fast image transfers to your computer, allowing you to see previews in approximately 2 seconds. For added convenience, four easy buttons--scan, copy, email, and PDF-automate the scanning process; so your projects can get done more quickly. Just position your original, select the use for the image, and in seconds it's ready to go. Canon's Hyper CCD III System on the 8400F Scanner features a 3200 dpi sensor offering greater light sensitivity with smaller pixels for capturing more image detail, as compared to 2400 dpi scanners.

Are some of your most precious images on old slides and negatives worn and collecting dust? Canon has a simple solution: FARE (Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement) Level 3. Its built-in retouching technology handles the most common problems found with old negatives and slides. It can remove much of the dust and scratches that may appear on your originals. It can also revive images that have faded over time. Plus, Backlight Correction Technology works to adjust image exposure, and Grain Correction will help smooth out grainy images.

I ordered the CanoScan 8400F to replace my old HP 6200C. Having a lot of slides to copy and not being pleased, at all, with the HP's slide copying I did a little research and determined the 8400F was probably what I wanted. I ordered it from Amazon.com and was very pleased with the help they were and received it within a few days. It was well packaged and I carefully removed the scanner and the accessories. Got the Quick Start Guide, installed the software and attached the scanner to one of the USB2 ports on my computer. First I scanned a letter size document which the 8400F did perfectly. The 8400F comes with an assortment of film guides, but since I was only interested in copying slides I installed the 35mm slide guide on the scanner which was almost too simple. I found 4 of my 35mm slides and placed them in the slots in the guide and actived the scanner through the software. It made a quick scan and then as it was starting to scan the slides it made a terrible clicking and popping noise. I immediately turned it off and carefully checked everything. It appeared to me that something was probably caught in the cog wheel that drove the scanning mechanism. Then I thought of all the trouble I had to go through to return the scanner, so I decided to give it one firm pop with the palm of my hand - Which I did. It must have dislodged whatever was clogging the cog wheel and it started working perfectly. The slide copying is far better than I had ever hoped for. I use Photoshop to touch up my slide copies and there was very little, if anything, I had to do to improve them. The CanoScan 8400F is one super scanner as far as I am concerned. The large assortment of software which included the driver, utilities, image editing, OCR, Digital Document management and Photoshop Elements that comes with the 8400F is very good and I have enjoyed using the different features. I have had it over a month and have really used the heck out of it. At the price of this scanner how can you go wrong?

I purchased this scanner back in April based upon all the reviews here and elsewhere. However, I didn't get around to installing the scanner until this past Saturday. Everything went smooth with the installation and so it was time for my first scan. I scanned a 4" x 6" photo and noticed something wasn't quite right. I checked carefully and about 3/16th of an inch was missing from the left side of the photo (the right side of the scanner when you are looking from above). I thought it was a fluke and tried again and got the same results. I then scanned a piece of paper that I folded in half so that there was text right up against the edge...same thing. I called tech support and they had me test it out thoroughly and concluded I needed a replacement. I, just like S.So who wrote his review back on November 11, 2004 am now getting a refurbished replacement! I told the tech support specialist that I didn't think that it was fair since it was still under warranty. However, he said it was Canon's policy to do it this way. I get a refurbished scanner and return my brand new one, that never worked correctly, in the boxes that the refurbished one arrives in. Oh well!UPDATE: I JUST GOT MY REPLACEMENT SCANNER YESTERDAY (FRIDAY, JULY 15) AND CONNECTED IT ONLY A FEW MINUTES AGO. I RAN SOME TEST SCANS AND THE REPLACEMENT DOES THE EXACT SAME THING!!! AM I THE ONLY ONE TO NOTICE WHAT OBVIOUSLY IS A DESIGN AND/OR MANUFACTURING DEFECT?!?!?

This is my 3rd scanner so far (the other 2 are Epsons) and I find the hardware to be above average. The only problem I have with the hardware is the cable attaching the lid electronics to the body is too stiff: after a few openings and closings, the plug wiggles loose. Then all of sudden the scanner goes haywire. Of course if you don't scan transparencies, you'll never notice. The ScanGear software however really stinks for transparencies. There are a lot of functions for color balance, 'tone', brightness. But if you really know digital darkroom techniques, a lot of these functions are quasi- misnomers. That is, they don't quite do what they are suppose to. The instructions are very simplistic and don't really tell you what the function does to the basic scan. Even when I turned most of them off to get a basic scan so I can work with it in Photoshop, it tries to do automatic correction, most of the time inconsistently and not all the time. So sometimes when the preview looks good, the scan will be way off, then when it's rescanned 20 minutes later it will be perfect. Even when the automatic corrections work, they are very rough compared to what you can get in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, more so because the preview image is too tiny and very low resolution. I still cannot figure out what it is doing after 3 weeks. So it's quite often a crap shoot and I often just cross my fingers before I hit the start scan button. In batch mode, it often misjudges where the picture is exactly which is another poor automatic function. Again, there is no way to tell the software the correct position manually except in film strip mode. There, it is impossible to do batch scans. I call that buggy software.Hardware resolution and color depth is impressive for the price point. I finally gave up and got Vuescan software which connects to the 8400f nicely and does a wonderful job. Horray for Vuescan. Until they iron out the software problems, expect to add another $90 for the real cost for scanning transparency batches. It's still a good deal, but it would have been a great deal if the ScanGear worked. Canon should just include Vuescan with the scanner. Flatbed scans are great, but why do you need 3200 resolution for flatbed scans?
