Received a handblown version but has a defect on the cone portion. . Wouldn’t concern me if it wasn’t glass as it makes a stress concentration/ easier to break at that point. Have any of you had this problem?

I purchased chemex after doing some research and I’m very pleased with my purchase. I purchased the blown glass pot and glad I did cause I’ve hit it a couple of times on the side of sink and it did not bust. I would have bought one with a handle but after reading the reviews they said it was easy to break so got the blown glass. It’s been a learning curve brewing coffee but I have finally mastered it. The flavor is exceptional. One thing you do need is a good burr coffee grinder and scale that measure in grams and ounces. I’m following a chemex group on Facebook and they have helped me with brewing coffee. So far I can say I’m extremely pleased with my purchase.

This is our first pour-over coffee system and we love it already. Resulting coffee is a real treat, with flavour so much better than I thought we could produce at home. I ordered the Handblown rather than the Classic and received exactly the correct Handblown model.

I have been a CHEMEX user for a long time, but I've unfortunately broken 2-3 of them throughout the years doing very normal things (like setting it in the drying rack). So I've always been wanting a heftier version that was a bit more durable. BOY DOES THIS DELIVER! It's not only built thick and sturdy, but it's truly a beautiful piece of handmade art in its own right. I love it!

Like others, I bought the hand blown and received the classic. However, Amazon was good about the return and I can verify that upon re-order, I received the correct item.As for the coffee maker itself, I’m not going to try to convert anyone to pour over. I’m here simply to help anyone wondering whether the handblown is worth the premium. In my one use, I’m already going to say yes. The design is slightly different from the so-called classic. This one seems a bit larger (I would swear the 8 cup is closer to 10), but more importantly for me, it is certainly heftier and heavier. Thicker glass. See photo (yes, it’s tea, so what; it’s late and I’m old).I purchased this maker with the hope this would last for years longer than my classic. Simply holding it in my hand, I’m confident it will.In this my first impression, as an owner of a shattered “classic,” I truly feel like this is a far superior product if you appreciate the differences, and even a little bit of the artistry.

My man has one at his house which we use every day. About two years ago I purchased a smaller version for my home (I stay at my house about half the time) which lasted about six months (possibly less time) until it broke. I recently bought this one, much thicker glass. Be sure to read the label and model number, the classic isn't as thick as this one as I understand. The handblown is the way to go for sure. While mine is new, my man has had his for years with teens in the house and it is still in one piece. This is a perfect size for one or two large cups of coffee, Yeti 20 oz. I don't think the larger carafe would work well because the filter would be too full of coffee grounds to make a large pot, there would be very little room to add water. Recommend the 8 cup.

To answer the main question first -- yes, this item makes a fantastic smooth cup of coffee. And with a little experimentation you can learn the right amount of ground coffee to make anywhere from one cup to six cups and make it as strong or as mild as you like. I'm partial to dark coffee like Starbucks Sumatra, and this makes a very rich, dark cup of coffee with no bitterness like my traditional coffee pot produces. So that's good. The filters work out to something like 12 cents each which is perfectly manageable, and I'm 95% sure you could use regular cone filters in a pinch. Some things that are not ideal: even with the wood collar, the entire glass pot will be very hot to touch when you make coffee. No biggie, just have to learn to be careful. If you make a large batch in order to drink 2 or 3 cups, the coffee remaining in the pot will lose heat fairly quickly so maybe have some kind of metal carafe or a travel mug or something to dump it into to keep it hot until you're ready for your second cup. I can't quite bring myself to use a filter just to make one cup of coffee so I'm always dumping the remaining 2 cups into a metal camping mug to keep it warm. Overall a nice product that makes a great cup of joe.

Yes, there really is a difference between this hand-blown carafe and the manufactured variety; I have one of each. The manufactured carafe works just as well but the glass on the hand-blown carafe is thicker and heavier; it feels much sturdier. Looks very elegant! It remains to be seen if over time the hand-blown carafe wears better. The Chemex method makes some of the best coffee I have ever tasted. I wanted to get away from my electric coffee machine because of all the plastic parts and more importantly the difficulty of keeping it clean. The Chemex brewer is a breeze to use and clean. Make sure you use Chemex filters, place one in the carafe as directed and rinse with hot water. Pour off the rinse water, add your freshly ground coffee and slowly pour over water just under the boil. When it stops dripping just toss the filter and serve! This method doesn't take any longer than my regular electric drip coffeemaker but requires more hands-on attention throughout the process. The coffee is much much better; it is definitely worth the extra effort. You will love it!
