I've tried the thumb method and its never a good outcome. This Nostepinne is a godsend to me in my knitting when I order yarn that is still in a hank/skein.

I'm a hand-spinner and while I usually store my finished yarns as skeins, sometimes I need to turn them into center-pull balls. While I've got a cheap ball-winder and swift, it's often just easier to keep things simple and use one of my nostepinnes.This item from Amazon actually included THREE wooden nostepinnes, not just one. Despite the low price, they're made of quality, heavy wood with a lovely smooth finish.Using a nostepinne takes a little practice, and I recommend looking up an instructional video on YouTube if you're brand new.

This is a nice size, quality smooth, sturdy nostepine for handwinding yarn. It should last a long time. Wind the yarn tail around a groove at the bottom, hold in place with non dominant hand. With dominant hand wind the length of yarn over the top end, back and forth, alternating sides 4 to 6 times. Turn the nostepine with the non dominant hand at the bottom a quarter turn then continue winding yarn over the top end. Repeat the process until the yarn is wound into a ball and slide it off the top of the nostepine. Now you can use yarn from the wound ball.

Smooth surface, feels nice in hand. Works well for my needs and I had no trouble creating a large center pull ball of yarn. Love that it's portable, unlike a ball winder.

I already have a swift and ball winder, so the nostepinne is especially helpful for rewinding smaller amounts of yarn left over from projects. You can, of course, use it to make a center-pull ball or not. There are a number of YouTube videos that show how to do this. The smoothness and weight of this nostepinne are just fine. For my use, I might have chosen a shorter one, but this size still works well. I will probably never get another one, as this one will no doubt last many generations.

Handy little tool. Can’t wait to try it with my umbrella Swift. Nice and smooth, good feel in the hand. The only thing I would change is the handle length/shape. I have large hands and arthritis. A slight “bulb” shape to the bottom of the handle would keep it from digging into my palm, and make it longer, too. Maybe like a half round shape? Just a thought.
