Before you purchase this, check your breaker box. There needs to be enough space between columns of breakers. The ear that the lock fastens to is blocked by the breaker across from it. The only way to lock it is to flip the other breaker closed. This should work fine on a breakers that are spaced far apart. Maybe in older homes or industrial settings. But the other houses in my area use the same style panel and this lockout won't work.

It took me a while to figure out how to install this device. Unfortunately, there are no instructions included, and the online page showing how the product is used does not include any actual pictures of a panel-installed circuit breaker using this device. Yes, there is a loose CB in one of the pictures, but I was looking for info on how to install it after the breaker is inside the panel and behind the dead front – because I thought it would make a difference. I eventually found out it doesn’t.At first, I couldn’t get the device to “hold” on to any branch breaker. (My panel and breakers are made by Eaton/Cutler-Hammer.) Without instructions, I fumbled around with it, finally realizing that the thumb screw is used to attach the device to the breaker toggle handle. There is no other point of attachment, and with only the thumbscrew pressure to keep the device in place, I could pull it off easily – because I didn’t realize I had to close the latch to get the lockout to stay put. Closing the latch puts the extra pressure necessary on the circuit breaker toggle to keep the mechanism in place. And yes, it works. Close the latch, and the lockout stays on the breaker, preventing it from being turned on.My intention is to “lock out” a 60 amp, two-pole breaker that is used to connect a portable generator to the panel during power outages. This back-fed breaker and the main panel breaker must not be “on” at the same time. So this device acts as a safety feature, requiring myself or the wife to think about what we’re doing before we do it.It comes with a padlock and two keys to keep the lockout from being accidentally removed. Basically, it’s a lot of protection for a very small amount of money. It’s simple to use, works well, and based on the quality, should last for years.
