This is a decent product, however I’ve been hand caning for awhile using cane from a local merchant who sadly went out of business. I thought I’d give this Amazon product a try. It’s ok, but nearly all of the can had a serious split or break somewhere along each piece, meaning I had to trim and restart and knot a lot, which I have not had to do with other cane. It also seems to splinter and get “hairy” much more easily than any other cane I’ve worked with, which is something to be aware of. Correct water temperature and minimal handling didn’t seem to make too much of a difference, maybe the cane in my batch just wasn’t a great batch, I’ll definitely order again and give it another shot, and if you’re new to caning and want to repair an antique chair, this kit is perfect! The directions are easy to follow and it comes with all the necessary tools. Just make sure to watch a few videos on hand caning and working with cane, and you’ll be set!

This kit was of low quality and suitable only to create frustration. The cane supplied had many weak places and "knots" which would kink or break. The instruction manual was complete and in full color but I found that a youTube on-line provided a much better sequence and the replacement materials from a different supplier were considerably high quality. The result is that I cut out and trashed my first attempt using the Commonwealth materials and was able to complete the project with the replacements from Peerless Rattan, also an Amazon seller

I am quite handy, especially with anything involving weaving type work. However I am a perfectionist, and this caning material was not the best quality. It had a lot of short strands and weak spots in the long strands. I live in a desert climate so I used a vaporizer to keep the room I was working in at a more regular humidity. If you really know what you are doing or want to experiment, I recommend buying a 2 or 3 packages so you have a better chance of getting more strands of cane that are long and strong. In the end I decided to have a professional cane my chairs.
