R+R front main seal on a 2009 N54. Removed using the threaded seal extractor, not the ones that need individual screws. Per BMW manual, screw into the seal by hand and then tighten to 40Nm to engage the seal. Pull out by tightening the bolt against the end of crank. Repeat as needed. Took 3 passes. First pass pulled out some damaged seal. Second pass pulled out more seal material. Third pass grabbed the metal portion of the seal and yanked it out. Worked like a charm. Installation was even easier.

Front main seal remover crank bolt holes not aligned properly. As you see in my photo I had to wallow out the holes. The rear main seal removed just fine but the plastic install cup did not account for the pin on the crank. That pin doesn't come out easy at all. I had to drill out that plastic piece as you see in the photo. Note that the screws they supply you are junk. I used some Spax construction screws. This kit may be fine for other engine series but not for N55!

This, or similar, is a must have to do the front crank seal on these more modern BMW's. Make sure to thread the seal remover fully into the old seal and go slow pulling it. One thing to note... The install cup is plastic. Not a deal breaker as the new seal should install with minimal force. It is just something to be aware of. Excellent tool for a very reasonable price with good model coverage.

Replaced the front seal on my N54 engine. Tried using the screw in extractor without luck even after screwing it in several times as far as I could. Finally used the flat adaptor with the sheet metal screws and backed it right out. Setting the new seal was straight forward. Hopefully I will never have to use this tool again.

Was a little nervous about buying a (much) less expensive set of tools, but for only one job I took a chance. The takeaway is that yes, it is probably not even in the same league as the more expensive options as far as quality. However, I changed out 3 different crankshaft seals without replacing or braking any parts. I was just very careful and did not rush or force things. Bottom line is that it did exactly what it was intended to do.
