The oil slinger has to be pressed in, it will be tight. I used a regular propane torch to heat up the slinger only and lightly hammer it in with any metal pipe or large socket that fits over the inside outer lip. Do not over press it in or it will tear up the rubber seal.

Happy to have a replacement part for my jeep xj 96 which has a np231. The inner diameter was too small so had to dremel it. Just grind it to the point it barely slides past the splines. Hammer it on til it’s pressed against the washer behind it. This part isn’t really necessary if you’re using your XJ on the road. It’s nice to have as it retains the OEM look which matters to me. Gets 4 star because there’s a replacement but you need to do a bit of grinding to have it perfectly press on

Installed on my 1998 Jeep Wrangler but I had to enlarge the inner diameter with a Dremel and the installation required some light love taps to have it sit flush. All in all, got the job done.

I tried it on my NP231 but it doesn't fit well, you're better off running it without the dust shield. Or just getting an SYE

I installed this on my 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ and the fitment was the same as the oem unit that I had removed to replace the leaking rear output shaft seal. This unit was identical in size and the thickness of the steel to that of the factory unit I had removed. I would recomment this product to anyone.

Didn't want to go on an NP242 output shaft, or at least I didn't want to beat my shaft hard enough to make it fit.. I had to file it down to make it work, and think I went just a little too far as it's a bit loose now. To make it worse, it was all for naught as the seal looked good, so guess my leak is from somewhere else.

Works as described. Fairly easy to install. I heavily recommend a deal puller to remove the old one.
