Bought this for drilling pen blanks (and similar) and it works better than I expected. I have used for round, square, and rectangular blanks with better results than any other way I have tried (several).

The clamp works nicely with square wooden billets; I have not tried it with rectangular ones. Opens wide enough to take a good variety of stock. Centers accurately enough that the billet can be turned around and drilled from both ends, meeting cleanly in the middle. This is a big advantage when turning pens, since even the slightest wobble on the quill end will result in a hole that is flared at one end that won't glue to the tube firmly. By drilling in from both ends you eliminate the worst of this problem. It also helps to avoid blowout. My only reservation is that it can sometimes be difficult to work with resin blanks, which have a tendency to get pushed backward into the jaws as you advance the tailstock quill. I expect this is going to be a problem with most chucks of this nature though.

Added this pen chuck to my lathe and was very impressed how easily the pen blanks come out with the drilled hole so accurate. No more trying to find the center of the blanks so I can take it to my drill press to get the blank drilled out. Very easy to set up and drill the pen blanks. Highly recommended.

Works great for square blanks even those which aren’t quite square. Not great for round blanks but that not what it was meant for.

My son an I had been drilling pen and razor blanks with my drill press. Which works but is a far more involved process than using a blank drilling chuck. I was surprised at how small it is but it is sufficient for blanks up to about an inch-and-a- quarter. It seems well made and operates smoothly.

Bought this as a first time pen maker and am very satisfied with its performance. The small tommy bars are a little bit of a pain but I added some longer handles too them since I was always misplacing or looking around for them before. I did have one of the tommy bar tips break off but PSI replaced it no problem. My only regret is now I am expanding to more making things on the lathe and I probably will soon want a bigger and more versatile chuck. If I had known better I might have bought a more expensive type at the beginning instead of using the $90 on this limited use one.

Two major problems. 1. The arms holding the wood could seriously injury the left hand if you get the lathe tool two close. 2. In order to clear the spinning arms I used a 1x1.5 square 12 inches long. As long as the tail stock live center was engaged the piece was sort of stable. As soon as the live center was removed the fingers holding the wood moved at the end of the finger. The result was the wood wobbled and the hole I was drilling was off center. If one used a short piece of wood, maybe three inches it might hold steady. But the danger of a hand being struck by the spinninjg fingers is not worth the risk.

Works well, blanks do not have to be square, hole ends up in centre, clear drill bit of chips often, if using a long bit, hold bit close to chuck to reduce vibration and prevent oversized hole. Takes a little practice but will do a good job once you get used to it. Practice on a couple of scrap pieces before ruining a good blank.

I have used this chuck to drill both wood and acrylic pen blanks without any problems. Much easier to drill my pen blanks than using a 4 jaw chuck.

Does not fit a mini lathe 1" 8 tpi must have an adaptor to work on the 3/4 headstock of most minis. "I needed a 3/4 to 1" that i already own" this has saved me from misalignment drill press issues saving me from blowing out small bittle blanks like snakewood and allowes for perfect centering on longer blanks. Built tough and highly recommended

I have only pen turning pens for a short time. I failed several of my first attempts trying to drill a straight hole on a bench top drill press, I could not get everything perfectly level. At the rate I was going this chuck will pay for it's self very quickly. Every blank I've drilled with it has been near perfect. With a little lining up, I've drilled round blanks also. Granted it does take a little longer, but I'm not wasting blanks any longer. Well worth the money, especially if you struggle with the drill press.
