This would make a good gift for a young person that wants to learn whittling. An adult needs to be with a child while doing this for safety reasons

I gave this to my 13 year old son a couple of months ago, when he said that he really liked wood carving, which he had tried at school, almost 3 months later and he still uses it quite often. He has gotten pretty good at carving little things out of scrap pieces of wood. It was worth every scent to know that not only he is doing something that he likes, but it's hands on and it gets him away from technology. It was a great beginners set.

I had dabbled in a lot of crafts but never wood carving when I saw this kit. I’m admittedly kind of a klutz, so I was a little wary of working with knives but seeing photos in the product description of the (small) knives and children using them to carve eased my concerns enough to order the kit. In terms of my prior crats experience, I had largely worked in a variety of fiber arts media and needlework (along with one disastrous attempt at cake decorating.)It took me awhile to get the basics down and I found out that while I’m a whole lot better at woodcarving than I was at cake decorating, I won’t be abandoning either needlework or fiber arts to become a full-time woodcarver. Still, I enjoyed the experience of learning at least the basics of a craft totally outside my comfort zone and existing skill set. I’m keeping the kit for further use because I’m curious to see how far I can go in terms of developing woodcarving skills and also because I genuinely enjoyed my first experience trying it.

This kit really does have everything you need to start learning to whittle. It does include a small pair of gloves (for very small hands) and a larger pair of gloves would fit medium-large hands well (My hand is a medium woman’s hand in the pic). The sturdy canvas roll holds all carving knives in place well, has a small carabiner to hook on a backpack, and ties closed securely. The knives seem sharp, are comfortable to hold and if need to be sharpened a nice sharpener is included, as are a ruler, a pencil, a pencil sharpener, and 2 different grit sanding rounds. The 4 blocks of wood will just get you started on your whittling journey. The included spoon will really help you practice your techniques and maybe get you started with adding more detail. It would be nice for the kit to have a bag that could hold everything and make it easier to take everything with you.

I’ve never used a wood carving kit but saw this available and got it for my daughter. She’s 10 and loves all types of crafts. The other day she had some friends over and she took out this kit for them all to play with. It was the first time she had opened it and it took them all a little by surprise. Why are these tools so sharp? Why are there squares of wood? Where are the instructions? Dad why did you buy this for me? I explained they needed to be careful with this one as it is a real knife set so they need to wear the included gloves. After going through the rules the kids gave up on it in 10 minutes. Carving wood is hard and takes patience to go from a large square to something that resembles a hamster. When the other kids left and my daughter was alone she went back to it and worked on it for another hour. She’s patient and will want to spend the time doing this, it was just a bad group activity. Overall we’re happy with the kit. The included wood is soft but still wood, it’s going to take time to shape. The tools are all very sharp and work well. My only criticism would be that they could have included a small instruction guide for the best use of each tool. You can figure it out intuitively but some first steps or best practices would be nice.
