The fins on the face cause the sandpaper to warp when the nut is tightened.

Works well and found this to be of decent quality and price. I would highly recommend and even replace those older backing pads that may be getting a little brittle or ourused from constant bumping into corners or work piece. I like how this has the slim profile of the metal arbor nut/washer adn that the plastic pad had those little preformed flanges that will aid in applying even pressure on the surface you are grinding/sanding.
