Is what it is. Woks OK, but cap leaks if it is not straight up and down. Also rusts exceptionally easily. Mine developed rust on it after a week - especially the hanging handle. It is large and bright though.

The style and raw metal finish was spot on, but the fit and finish weren't verry good the fuel cap and filler neck thread's were miss aligned and didnt seal, the glass globe fitted verry poorly in its holder ( to small ) and the cost was way to much for its size there are better options out there.

This lantern is lightweight and works great. I have 2 on my outside patio for ambiance but they serve as a great light source when the power goes out.

It's an oil lamp that works and has tight tolerances. I might have to bend some pieces and smooth out some pieces to make it lock and slide easier but that is personal preference. Other than that it works.

Arrived out of the box and the glass was broken. Also to add insult to injury, i also have to pay return postage for this from the UK to the USA and it has to be tracked to add even more onto the postage. Dont waste your time on this poor quality oil lamp and a seller that makes returns difficult. Avoid at all costs

As Dietz is if not The standard (argument can be made for Aladin), it's close enough. For those NOT familiar, as I was not until recently, the ONLY downside is that I had to look online for how to best use the thing. Short version: turn wick 1/16th inch above shield, light, let burn 5+ minutes, THEN further adjust for light as desired. Using 'lamp oil' (not from-the-"gas"-pump kerosene) I notice NO odor. Sure, it's not even a 40W bulb equivalent, but it's much brighter than a candle. If you are new to these, you might wish to invest in a pair of scissors just to trim the wick when needed.

I'll open with this:I like my lantern. The design and fundamentals are good.Compared to a cheap Walmart lantern, the build quality is significantly better, and more importantly, spare parts are readily available. You can easily order new wicks, globes, burners, and fuel caps right here on Amazon. It's also designed to be fairly serviceable, with the only part I would worry about with future repairs being the main globe retainer spring, since I see no real way to get to this.I'm a fan of the left handed globe lift lever. The #76 is the only Dietz with this design.I also find amusement that this was designed to resemble certain german-made lanterns, which of course is how I ended up with one (said German-made models being out of stock everywhere as of time I ordered it).Amusement intensifies when you realize that they called it "The Original", when it's a brazen copy...Interestingly, this seems to be one of few references to the raw galvanized zinc-plate model of the #76 that I can find. The "shiny" model seen most often is a nickel-plated variant.Speaking of the galvanized finish, the top-cap on top of the chimney has begun discoloring from the heat of use. This creates an interesting looking patina-like effect. The imperfections in the finish over the surface of the lantern also give it an attractive aged look.Actual performance is good. It seems brighter than my cheap Walmart lantern.I haven't figured out if this is placebo due to the lamp being a bright galvanized color instead of black-painted, a clearer and cleaner globe, or a genuine superior performance thanks to better draft design. That said, my experience was imperfect in several ways, but in no ways I was unable to repair. This unimpressive out-of-box experience cost the lamp one (1) star.>The fuel cap does not seal perfectly. The lantern will seep oil if leaned over towards the spout.>The locking tabs that hold the burner in were extremely loose. With the globe lifted, the burner would simply fall out of the lantern if I so much as touched it. I was able to repair this by pressing the tabs on the lantern down to engage with the tactile bumps on the burner.>The globe lift lever also did not engage with its locking detent on the air tube. Use of unreasonable force to bend the lever downward so that it can more positively engage the detent easily solved this.>Like every oil lamp I've bought so far, the wick required an initial trimming to even out the flame, as it had a very pronounced hot-spot.I'm still not perfectly happy with it, as the wick is thick and tough, and I didn't have anything that could really bite through it effectively. So it still has a minor hot spot. As such, I'm just going to use it as-is until the wick chars enough to be due for a routine trimming, and then even it out then.I've heard that you can run the lamp deliberately out of oil at a very low power setting to burn the wick even, but this was for central-draft round wicks which work best when gently charred in the first place. I'm not experienced enough with flat-wick lamps to weigh in on this trivia.Other than these little niggles, the Dietz #76 has been an excellent lamp that I expect to serve me well for years to come.

The galvanized model of the Dietz 76 added a vintage charm to my collection. I polished it with Never Dull and used a safe metal polish to protect the metal and it came out gleaming. For just over $20 I now have something to enjoy for years to come, but very useful when power is out. I only use Clean Heat fuel which burns clean if done right by burning out the new lamp outside for several hours and observing proper wick trim, filling and flame height insturctions. This is another great little lantern from Dietz and a valued keepsake. Thanks Cortes Unlimited and Amazon.

Hello, I have almost all the Dietz lanterns. Although this is not as nice as the Feuerhand 276 (made in Germany, suprax/boro silicate globe, galvanized with powder coat paint, better burner etc) I have to say this is pretty much a tie with the Feuerhand because the galvanized version is 23 dollars! Basically 1/2 the price. I have not problems with the 3/8, 1/2, and 5/8 inch burners but found the fuel hungry 7/8 inch burners (I have five in that size of different models) to be way too finicky getting a good flame shape. This little gem is really a great lantern. Super simple, super reliable, good price, and most importantly gets the job done. It's obviously a copy of the Feuerhand 276 but that is ok because Feuerhand pretty much copied the US's cold blast lanterns so it is even as far as I'm concerned. The only edge (besides quality and slight performance as well) the 276 Feuerhand has over this lantern is that it is made in Germany so I bought two of those as well. I highly recommend this model and cannot say the same about some of the other Dietz lanterns. There is a reason why Lehmans says this is their best selling model. If you're going to get a Dietz I can recommend this model.
