I’ve been a ASE certified mechanic for over 30 years. I rebuilt my personal vehicle’s engine. New valves, oil pump, timing chain, pistons, rings, & crankshaft bearings. How after 15 miles, does a piston disintegrate?Engine had been idling for 30 minutes. Drove around the block and parked it. Next morning drove to work 3 minutes away. After work I drove onto the freeway. Gradually accelerated up to 60 mph. Set cruise. Within a minute, a big bang. Smoke out the back and then pulled off to the side of the road.Had car towed to the house.Pulled the oil pan off. Hole in the oil pan and block.Oil pan was full of scraps of metal. Looking up on cylinder 4 I could see the cylinder head.Nothing but scrapes left of the piston.I’ve talked with several other qualified techs. No one has any idea how this could happened.I’ve never had anything like this happen.Sorry if this post offends manufacturer, but the Only conclusion, after examination is the piston may have been defective.
