Product Description

Dorotea Ceramics is inspired by the beauty of nature and artist Carolina Silva’s connection to the outdoors. This connection translates into ceramic pieces that acknowledge the value of the handmade and the imperfect. The patterns, colors and irregularities of each piece are drawn from the observation of natural growth and a curiosity about the botanical world, where flowers search for light and harmony with joy. The work follows this peaceful search from the artists’ hands to its place on your table. This beautiful collection of dinnerware and accessories features organic, handmade-inspired shapes that have subtle pops of whimsical color. Crafted from high-quality stoneware, there may be slight imperfections or variations in design and dimensions. Finished by hand, each piece features a delicate, recessed floral pattern and is carefully hand-painted allowing for slight differences in the glaze that add to the artisanal beauty.

About the Startup

Describe your product in 3 words.

Handmade, nature inspired, whimsical.

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

I wanted to apply my art to everyday objects. Pattern is a recurrent element in my artwork. At the time I was paying close attention to the way things grow in nature when not controlled by man. I wanted to translate this to the floral patterns in the tableware. I also wanted it to have the texture of an etching, add a tactile value to the products.

What makes your product special?

I think the fact that there is not only a functional intention but also an aesthetic intention. My beginnings making functional ceramics are very inspired by the Art and Crafts movement. In the words of William Morris: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." That motivation prevails in my creative process and hopefully shows in the product. Also the fact that there is a handmade element that doesn't aim for perfection but rather that each product is a result of human work and struggle.

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

All the new unexpected things I have had to learn, and I am still learning, along the process. Many times it is the challenges you face, having to be resourceful and true to your values what makes your work unique and different. Also, one of the most rewarding parts of my work is the contact with customers, the feedback I receive and knowing when the products enter their homes and lives and make them happy.

I absolutely love these mugs. Every time I open the cabinet to grab a mug it is a joyful experience. I drink coffee out of them daily and machine wash them. Very glad I purchased them.

We were originally gifted a set of these plates as a wedding gift and ended up purchasing another set for a total of 8. Every time we have friends over for dinner, they comment on how beautiful the plates are. We have hand washed them, so we can’t comment on how they do in the dishwasher, but they haven’t had any problems in the microwave. We’ve had the first set for almost two years and the second set for about a month now and they still look just like new. Only complaint is that one of the plates in the set we just purchased arrived with a small chip in it. Not too noticeable, but just a bit disappointing. But otherwise, we have loved these beautiful and unique plates!

They are beautiful and wonderful as pasta and soup bowls. I love them! And am considering purchasing 2 more sets as holiday gifts. They appear fragile but so far have held up well and I don’t tend to be gentle with my China and porcelain pieces.

I got these from my wedding registry. They are more beautiful in person. The art on it has texture and seams authentic. It comes in durable packaging, which makes it easy to transport. The mugs probably holds a little more than 12 oz, so it's a generous size for a mug. I give this 5 stars for the quality of the product.

These are absolutely gorgeous and great quality. They are shorter than I anticipated, so they won’t work quite as well for my needs, but they look so nice that I’m keeping them anyways. Not quite large enough for your average bowl of cereal unless you go by the recommended serving size. Lol

I got the large bowls and they are so gorgeous. The quality is great for the price. Love the organic feeling and design of the bowls and looking forward to incorporating them into my daily use. It's a good weight and not too heavy.Reading the other reviews, that they were made in China and how they felt mislead. The company only talk about the designer from Seattle, "Dorotea is a collection of nature inspired ceramic dinnerware and accessories made by Spanish-born, Seattle-based artist Carolina Silva." I don't think that is misleading people to believe that the items are made in the US, unless they expected the Designer to literally make all of these. There are different levels of Artisanship skills that come from China, to cheapen their skills because of the country they live in, is like saying everything that everything comes out of America is Walmart brand quality. It's really the reputation of the company for quality control no matter where the item is made.
