My daughter is in first grade learning to read, which is not easy for her. The little yellow tool that comes with this is nice when we want her to focus on a word and she's getting tired or if she is working on a compound word like backyard. We were able to have her just look at back- and then just look at -yard. That was really helpful. She also has weaker fine motor skills and the pinching of the yellow grip is easy enough for her to even do. The way it works is one side of the tool is stationary while the other side gets pinched in and out for the appropriate word size. The plastic sheets she likes to use, but those are less helpful for her as an actual tool we need, at least right now. We use reading strips with her to block the line above and below. However, she does like the sheets to put on her iPad, whether it's just fun or helps cut down the glare is hard to figure out with her, but she does like them. You do have to peel a plastic protective layer off the front and back of the color sheets. Otherwise, they aren't as clearly see through, so be sure to take the time to peel the plastic. The set was worth getting for the yellow tool alone for us.
