Despite Amazon, Canada Auto Supply, and Rock Auto claims that this kit fits, it does not. After determining this kit would not work, I ordered a Gates kit (Rock Auto) which was just a re-packaged Edelmann kit in a Gates box, the plastic inner bag said "Edelmann 9229". Identical. All I REALLY needed was the upper pinion oil seal (leaking PS fluid) which was available locally and relatively cheap ($5). The only components in the kit that fit were the 4 blue teflon seals for the pinion body. No idea what the copper washers and many other items in the kit were for but definitely not for an 08 ML diesel. The teflon backed rack end seals were too small, the white teflon centre rack seal was too wide, etc etc. for all the other components. This is the "listed" kit for all ML's for this model year, the rack in mine is confirmed as OEM, so I don't know what the deal is. There doesn't seem to be any kit listing difference between a diesel or gas ML.If all you're needing to replace is the upper pinion oil seal (seems to be the common failure point) it's a Nitrile 20mm x 30mm x 5mm double seal with dust lip. Nothing fancy. You'll also need a 52mm x 2mm o-ring for the mating surface between the pinion cover and rack body; mine was a green Viton but I can't see why a regular medium hard Nitrile wouldn't work, it's under no more pressure or heat than the upper or lower oil seals which are OEM Nitrile. I had my entire rack out to inspect it, all the other seals on mine looked fine, but the 0-ring was flattened square. I'm going to see if it's possible to replace just the upper seal without removing the entire rack (PITA) as it looks like there may be enough room get the pinion cap out (that's where the upper seal is). If the cap will come out the pinion assembly will as well if you're wanting to replace anything on the pinion or the lower pinion seal. I had no PS fluid in the gear area of the rack but replaced the lower seal anyways as it too was cheap and available (FWIW 28mm x 38mm x 7mm double seal, dust lip not required as the outside of the seal faces down and towards the greased gear section). I hope this helps someone save some time and/or $$$.
