Your cart is empty. 5 piece specific gravity metal cylinder set. Each cylinder features a top hook. Set includes Copper, Tin, Aluminum, Zinc, and Stainless Steel. Each cylinder has the same 0.5" (12.5mm) diameter and mass (30g) but are various lengths. Since these cylinders are equipped with hooks, they can be easily lifted from boiling water. Additionally, the hooks allow each cylinder to be easily massed using a spring scale (scale not included).
Excellent for physics classrooms. Density metals have a wide range of educational applications for all grade levels, including density investigation, specific heat and specific gravity exploration. Set includes a complete instruction manual that gives a background on density, specific gravity & specific heat and includes inquiry based student activities with capture sheets.
Due to the nature of raw metals, some oxidation or corrosion due to humidity and storage may occur. Simply scuff any oxidation off to make the item look brand new again. These density metals are designed to be used in an educational setting and are not fabricated using ultra high precision machining. Expect tolerances in the +/- 5% range of any stated dimensions (although they are generally much tighter).
The Eisco Labs Density Investigation series is designed to help students identify and figure out mass, understand the relationship between mass, volume & density, to understand specific heat and specific gravity and provide them with quality introductory physics and chemistry concepts.

For a classroom lab activity, this isn't a bad set for exploring some material science. The diameter is within +/- 5% of the 0.5" diameter measurement listed, and while they don't quite hit the precise 30g mass, it too is within +/- 5% tolerance. Each sample has its periodic table name etched in the piece, and while you're getting some variation from the unspecified hooks (which do not seem to be removable in any nondestructive way) if you take measurements with a set of calipers and model the cylinder in CAD software like Fusion360 and assign the current material you'll get a reasonably accurate, calculated physical property values (and theoretically use that information to determine the approximate mass of the hooks) Speaking as a STEM teacher, at this price point it would nice if there were some lab activities, printed or online, provided with the samples. It's not hard to come up with good lessons with the material, however, raw material of 1/2" diameter rods of the respective materials can be purchased for less, and as precision as time is to educators, Eisco could provide a bit more to make this set worth the extra cost

The EISCO Hooked Metal Cylinders Set was requested for a 7-year-old with an intense interest in rocks, metals, and crystals.Four of these are wonderful examples of elements: Tin, Copper, Aluminum, and Zinc. Stainless Steel is an alloy, and it really does not belong in this group.This is an excellent educational tool.
