Andrew Jones did a really nice job designing this speaker while considering the target market, applications where and how it would likely be used and the result is that it delivers. What do I mean by this? Not to sound like a snob but most $2000 per pair speakers will not be placed in a great room, optionally within that room and paired with the best gear. Odds are against all of that as this is a med-tier product and most of the consumers will lack the knowledge of acoustics, speaker placement calculations, room modes, dispersion characteristics, etc. That said what is clear about these Elacs is that they can be placed out into the room away from walls but you will want a subwoofer or 2 for music reproduction as the 40hz rating clearly favors the speaker coupling to the front wall for baffle step. With the rear of the speaker within 6-12" off the wall you have really good in room response with no boomy bass. Back to my opening most users buying at this price would not think to pull the speakers 4-6ft out into the room so the design favoring 6-12" makes sense.Vertical and horizontal dispersion is very good. NO tight sweet spot. Again these speakers are likely not designed for ultra-critical listening as the customer base doesnt plan to sit in one exact spot and listen to only audiophile music. These speakers sound really good on all genres of music and I enjoy them standing and moving around the room as they throw a large soundstage and load the room nicely. If you are reading this you might get the sense that I have more experience than the AVG buyer of these speakers and you would be very correct. This is a 2nd system for general music while I hang out, work, cook, enjoy life. That said if you want a speaker that will fill a large room, sound pleasing on all music and can be placed near the front wall then these are for you. Will they hang with audiophile speakers costing many times more that make it seem like the band is in your room? Nope but it sounds like a high quality music reproduction and for the price that is hard to beat.
