A water heater has a pilot light which never goes off. This pilot light constantly burns the thermocouple which in turn sends a low voltage current to the control unit to signal that it's ok to relieve the gas valve when the water's temperature is below your setting. If the pilot light is out, or the thermocouple is malfunction, there is no electric current generated so the gas valve is shut off, the burner will not burn and there is no hot water. The thermocouple is a safety setup to prevent water heater from gas leak. Think about this: if there is no thermocouple, the pilot light is on, and the water temperature is low, the gas valve opens, and the burner starts to ignite by the pilot. This works fine until the pilot light is off for some reason like the wind blows it off? What then a valve opens, gas goes to burner, and not burning due to no pilot light? What will result is that the unburned gas fills up the garage or basement, not only it can poison you, but also when someone inadvertently ignite a spark it will explode and the whole house is destroyed.Thermocouple, this little device is so important and is also so cheap. The price is between $10 to $20, but yet this device is constantly under fire, the oxidation made it eventually out of function and needed to be replaced. The average cost for a plumber coming to your house to replace it is between $600 and $1000. Yes, it is ripe off but the wife and daughter would mad at you big time if no water to shower in a chilly morning! So this makes a great candidate for a DIY project, for it take about an hour to complete the work for less experience DIY'ers. But when you buy the thermocouple, my advice is to spend a few bucks more to buy the best quality one. This Emerson thermocouple has a good brand reputation and the quality is by no means compromised. I recently replace my thermocouple with this one so far it has no issue whatsoever. Of course no one knows what will happen years down the road but I would bet it would out last the cheaper ones.
