This item is listed as a crib mattress but could also be used (as I intend to use it) as a soft floor mattress for when baby is out in a main room with parents. The cover zips off for cleaning, and inside is a layer of padding fabric wrapped around a soft foam interior. It clearly should be used with a sheet as any mattress should.The paperwork included states it is Greenguard Gold certified. This means it's met a high bar for low amounts of Volatile Organic Compounds. There's a basic Greenguard level and the Gold level, indicating this gold certified product has been tested for more than 10,000 chemicals. It should be noted though that this certification doesn't check for contents of products, only for emissions. One of the primary things the certification checks for is formaldehyde.The reason I've dropped from 5 stars to 4 is that the padding layer is not specifically sized for this item so if you remove the cover to wash it, it will be a bit of a challenge to get it wrapped cleanly again without any wadding or lumpy bits. I can see this as the weak point of the product, becoming worn and torn over time. If you don't ever have any incidents where removing the cover is required, it looks like the cover is sturdy and of good quality and should last well.
