This is my home pH meter that I use for checking pH for health reasons for family members and cat (eg: saliva, vomit, urine). It is sometimes hard to catch fluids from a cat. This unit has the advantage that not much more than a single drop is required with the flat electrode surface. It is also very useful for determining soil condition. Some plants need acid soil (azalea & rhododendron), but lawns will not thrive if soil pH is too high or too low. Some homeowners fail to realize that this is the main reason they are unable to grow a decent lawn or that it requires too much watering, when the solution is so simple: spread either sulfur or lime (to rectify too alkaline or too acid respectively). I am a scientist who is accustomed to working with pH. I say that this meter is very good quality for home use or field use. It has a long life (years) if you are a weekly user, not a 10 times a day user. Usually, it is the tip ("pH module") that goes bad that can be replaced at about half the cost of the entire unit. I have been using this meter since 2004 and am only on the second unit. I use this unit on average one time per week. The pH110 electode (model pH115 is for the replaceable electrode alone) housing can crack next to the refillable reference electrode, so be sure that this is not too tight. The plastic may shrink ever so slightly as it ages and become ever so slightly more brittle.

I bought a unit that was heavily discounted in a "scratch and dent" manner. The old adage is, you get what you pay for - that seems to be the case with this unit. The electrode cap that came with it was broken, but I had also purchased a refill kit, so I replaced it and made sure the solution was topped up. When I plugged the electrode into my Extech meter and powered up, I attempted to calibrate using 4 and 7 buffer solutions. The initial reading when placed in the buffer was way, way off, and the unit would not/could not calibrate. (I put back the original electrode from my meter to make sure the meter itself was okay - and it is; with the original electrode, calibration works and readings are repeatable.)To be fair: neither the electrode nor the refill kit came with much in the way of instructions, so I had to go with best-guess understanding of what was required. It may be that I did something wrong ... but one way or the other, I wasted my money on this unit. Based on this experience, I would not buy a "scratch and dent" discounted unit again.
