We have been barefoot trimming our horses now for several years (farriers hard to get a hold of in our area). This is a nice reasonable addition to our farrier kit. Notice, I said addition. I would not rely on this to (or even the course tooth) to perform all of the 'heavy duty' filing (use a rasp, nippers, and knife for this). We got the fine tooth. This will be mostly used for smoothing / rounding out the edges (from the top). This could also help smooth out any flakes or chips, so could also be useful for a quick touch up. Fits in hand nicely and isn't as heavy or bulky as the full size rasps (small woman hands here), so this filing block certainly has its place. We also trim our goat (and sometimes sheep) hooves, so we may also end up using it to smooth out some edges. File block is sharp, so it's a good idea to always wear gloves when using.

This is a great idea and easier to use when I need to file my horse's feet when they get chips and snags, than pulling out a long full size rasp all the time. The price is good too, I will get the coarse one as well and keep both in my grooming box. the handle though might be hard to hold for some people with small hands, but its not too bad. the handle has indentations for your fingers to grip the rasp

This is basically part of a regular hoof file attached to a wooden handle. It looks like that as well. (2nd picture) The handle is solid and easy to hold and it is securely attached. Like hoof files tend to do, mine arrived with a small amount of rust (3rd picture). It was not enough to affect its usefulness. It arrived sharp and ready to use. The first picture is how it fits in my hand. I wear a medium woman’s glove or a small men’s glove, for reference. When I first took my horses barefoot I got a Rider’s Rasp at the recommendation of my trimmer. It was easier to use than this, but significantly more expensive and the rasp dulled very quickly. I then started using a regular is short rasp. With practice that became easy as well. I have been maintaining my horses hooves between trims for 16 years and have had TBs as well as QHs. I even trimmed my own horses hooves for three years without a trimmer until I got pregnant with my first child and physically could not do so any more.To be honest, I find a regular file to be easier to handle and faster to use. I found this one slipped out of my hand when trying to do the toe roll. That said, it may be because muscle memory is for a different tool and that with enough use this one might become easier. However, I have grown used to having a longer file surface as well and can get more done in a shorter period.I would NOT recommend this for those individuals used to and comfortable maintaining their horses hooves with traditional tools. However, I WOULD cautiously recommend someone new to doing so at least give it a try if using a regular raspIs too intimidating (as it was for me initially). It is well made and solid for the price.Even though I do not personally find this rasp useful I still gave it 4/5 stars because it is well made and does do the job it is advertised for. It is not fancy nor a work of art, but it is solid and probably dependable for the length of its lifespan. I took the star away because I found it difficult to get a uniform toe roll with it. But, as stated before, that may just be muscle memory working against me and someone else not have such trouble. If nothing else, give it a try. It isn’t very expensive so you won’t be out much doing so if you too decide it isn’t long enough. If you are new to maintaining a horse’s trim I recommend you look for reviews from someone in the same situation before making a decision about purchasing this.

I keep this little rasp in my trailer in case my horses’ get a chip in their hooves. It can easily file down, but it isn’t as sharp as a real farrier rasp. Which is to be expected at the price. Those are very expensive. Easily fits in my hand and not too sharp that I have to worry about cutting myself or horses.

This is a good addition to our personal farrier kit to help with chips and nicks between our regular farrier visits. We ordered the fine tooth file for the minor adjustments we’d like to fix, as I imagine the rough tooth is probably more difficult to use in a smaller hand held size. Is it going to replace the heavy duty filing that can be done with a large metal file? No, but it’s certainly capable for maintenance and small jobs when needed. The handle is a good size, not too big or small, and is nicely shaped. It’s sturdy and was ready to go out of the box. It was particularly useful for an older arthritic horse who has trouble holding their feet up for too long… we were able to file the outside of the hoof with it resting on the ground.

I am older and my body isn't very flexible. This hand rasp is wonderful. I had my mare's shoes pulled since I mainly ride in an arena. It allows me to finish the edges of her hoof when they are chipped. I can keep her hoof edges smoothed without additional assistance in-between trims. The wood handle is big enough to support using the rasp, even one stroke at a time. I have used lighter weight short rasp tools before, but this one is much better. I also used a hoof stand to support the hoof or leg depending on position. I recommend this for minor repairs needing a rasp.

I trim my horse in between trimmings by the farrier to make them stretch. This hoof file is a good addition to our own personal farrier kit. I wouldn't say that this tool is fully capable of performing all of the heavy duty filing that the farriar performs but it is definitely great to have and can get a simple job completed.I ordered the fine tooth file because of the fact that we will be using it for minor trims. My draft tends to get these little snags around her edges of her hoofs so this is exactly what we need for her because this could really help smooth out any areas of her hoof that chip. The size is perfect because ai have small hands and it fits in my hand nicely. It is not too heavy s heavy or large as the full. It works really well for us because we also trim our donkey and goats depending on how well they act. Some days are easier than others but we definitely appreciate having it.
