If you attempt to insert this bolt into a 2009 Toyota Prius Head block you will discover the bolts snag every 360 degree rotation upon tightening like it's trying to get over a hump every time but then will turn. This happens on all 10 bolts going in. These bolts aren't a perfect fit and risk stripping your headblock out. They are obviously shorter than Genuine OEM Head Bolts when compared side by side.

Followed the torque/lbs instructions and it broke one of the head bolts off in the engine block. Is this a consistent problem with these?

Toyota requires measuring the old bolts before reusing. If stretched too much, discard. Measuring is done with a large span (5") micrometer or caliper as the tolerance is given to several decimal places. Measuring ten bolts is impractical for most people. Don't chance it, buy the bolts and washers and worry about other things. Have the head pressure tested, valves inspected, and the head resurfaced, because it will be warped. So may the aluminum block; allowable limit is .002", corner to corner. Also, bolts are 9mm diameter. A thread tap this size for cleaning the block threads isn't commonly available, so if the new bolts don't run in easily by hand all the way, use an old bolt which has 3 lengthwise flutes cut along the threaded portion. I used a cutting disc on a die grinder. Check the remaining threads for damage before using and start it in carefully - don't mess up those aluminum threads in the block. Go slow and don't cut corners. There are no easy engines anymore. This 1.5 has no valve clearance shims. If the valves are recut, the change in clearance between the cam and follower (bucket) requires new, expensive and not-available-off-the-shelf followers of specific thickness (thinner) to restore the correct clearance. It pays to size up the whole repair situation before committing to machine work and buying non-returnable parts or opening gasket sets. Designers design for manufacturing, not repairing. Just another example... .
