This looks similar to the Eaton unit that I have. I think it is just a case stuffed with MOVs. You can't tell if or when it does anything, you just have to hope that it will when the time comes. It is like moving the MOVs from your power strip to the breaker box. It does have an indicator for each phase to show that it is active and supposedly working. Overall I have no problems with this one and would probably recommend it.

This whole house surge protector is the perfect fit for your home’s protection. It was very easy to install once you installed the required 50amp power breaker. It has four wires which go to the ground, neutral and the last two go to the breaker, and you are done. Simple as that, just make sure to completely cut off all the power if you decide to do this yourself.
