Step 1
The lock is set to the default code (0-0-0) when initialized at the factory.
Step 2
Using a pen (or another tool), press the code switch until you hear a ticking sound.
Step 3
Turn the code wheels to set your desired password.
Step 4
Push the marked button to the left until you hear a ticking sound. The code switch will pop out, and the lock will open.

Can't say if it will hold up through a fire, but it seems to be made of really nice material. It has a rubbery feeling texture so I was surprised it didn't have any weird odors. I live that there are 2 sizes in this pack. I put documents in one and some cash, cards, and a couple pictures in the smaller one. The large one is big enough to hold a standard size notebook and have plenty of extra room. You could even put the smaller bag inde the larger bag. The locks are a nice added feature and are easy to set up (directions are on a card inside the bag). Hopefully I won't have to ever find out if they really work, but I feel more secure having my important things in them.
