If your on a sourdough journey, you want all the tools! This spurtle is beefy and great for mixing starter! It's really high quality with a nice heavy feel in the hand.

I honestly didn't even know what a spurtle was, but I did know that I wanted to transition from using plastic and silicon utensils when cooking. I have a similar slender spatula that I use when making sourdough, so when I saw the Spurtle, I knew it would be a perfect replacement. I'm so grateful that I ordered it. It is the perfect size to use in my sourdough jar as well as when mixing my dough. It is made of acacia wood which is sturdy but lightweight. It is so easy to clean. Most times I just rinse with water and dry.I recommend this item if you make sourdough or any other kind of baking.

Does what it says it will - stirs starter. I appreciate the weight of it - feels balanced in the hand, the wood is smooth and free of chips or splinters. Gets in the crevices better than a wooden spoon. Large enough to work with a large, deep jar of starter. Glad I have it.

I had no idea what a spurtle was until I saw this. I've been making quick breads in my bread machine and the ingredients get stuck to the side of the pan due to the thick dough/batter. I needed something to scrape the pan between stir cycles. A typical (small) spatua is just a bit too big, and a wooden spoon doesn't scrape well (too small a side area). I decided to try this, even though a little voice in my head said "But it's just a stick...". Well, I'll never be without it! It's perfect for fitting into the pan between the mixing blade and the side: I use the flat side to scrape the ingredients, then the dowel shape is perfect for a quick stir after, and the point easily breaks up clumps. Can't wait to use it on porridge! The wood is nice looking, tight grain, and arrives factory oiled, which really brings out the colors, and makes it a a warm addition to the kitchen. Highly recommend!

This sourdough mixing stick works great. It’s just the right length to be able to reach to the bottom of my sourdough jar and still long enough for me to hold onto it comfortably while I’m stirring. It has a smooth finish and a comfortable grip. It’s so much easier to use than the wooden spoon I had been using. The thickness of the mixing stick makes it so much easier to stir my sourdough with. I like the flat side for scraping down the sides of my sourdough jar. It also comes in handy to lift the sourdough starter out of my jar when I am using it for a recipe. It’s like having a spoon but better because the long flat surface area holds more than my spoon does. My sourdough starter sits easily on top of the flat area and stays there while I am moving it from my jar to my measuring cup. It’s a nice color and looks good in my kitchen.

Was going to rate this 3 stars but I was able to save it with a good sanding and sitting it out in the sun for a spell. Like most people do, I first wanted to give this a wash before using it and sadly noticed the soap suds on my dish cloth getting discolored as I was washing it and sure enough, the stain is coming off on this. Definitely not what I want getting mixed into my sourdough starter and sourdough. I washed it 2 more times, allowing it to dry afterwards and each time more stain residue was apparent. I ended up having to sand this down then put some food grade wood oil on it and set it out in the sun. I then gave it another wash and finally no more stain residue so I can actually use this now. It works nicely to stir my larger jar of starter when I have a large amount needed for when I bulk bake. I like cooking and baking with more natural things where I can and this fits the bill for that. Just make sure to not leave it soaking in water and dry it as much as you can after washing. I first wipe any starter left on it with a paper towel and it’s quick and easy to then get rinsed off clean. Then I dry it with a lint free cloth and prop it up and allow to more fully dry. I plan to give this a light treatment once in a while with some food grade wood oil when I have a longer period of time between wanting to use it and it should last a long time. I’ll then just give it a light wash when I ready to use it again. If I could do this again I’d opt for a non stained one. I just wasn’t thinking at the time that I got this one but with some elbow grease I have made it work out.

This review is for FJNATINH 1Pack 11 Inch Wooden Sourdough Bread Mixing Stir Stick Spurtle, Lightweight Bread Making Spatula Sourdough Whisk Dough Starter Wood Paddle, AcaciaI love learning new words! Spurtle is a pretty good one. This spurtle works great for the early stages of mixing the flour, salt and water for autolysis and then for incorporating the starter. The alternative is a rubber/silicone spatula with a metal handle because you are probably going to break a wood handle. For me, this works best in conjunction with the metal spatula - keeps me from damaging the rubber end but the spurtle isn't great for scraping the bowl.I haven't had any issues with the finish coming off, splinters, etc. - seems to be very well made of quality wood that is quite hard.

Unfortunately, the spurtle I received has an inch and half long crevice down the middle of the blade part. It is a jagged gouge and breaks apart easily which means I’d be getting splinters in my dough if I tried to use it. Otherwise, I like the feel of the tool in my hand and the size is perfect as it’s not too long nor is it too thick, making it uncomfortable to use. Not recommended until the quality control it tended up or the manufacturing process is improved.
