Just a word to the wise... do your research *in depth* before you order this. I have a 2012 MacBook Air A1466 and even though this product's description doesn't say "2012", it does say "A1466" so I thought I'd be ok. And I was wrong...oh so wrong.Just a little bit of googling would have told me that even though my MacBook Air is an A1466, there are vast differences between the 2012 A1466s and the later A1466s...most notably in the SSD connector, which has a different set of pins and takes a different type of NVME drive.

This adapter is needed to install a regular M.2 NVME SSD on to the MacBook Pro or Air to replace the proprietary SSD installed on them. Eve though was using this on a 10 year old MacBook was able to expand the storage in it with a Samsung 980 pro. No issues. MacOS has to be upgraded before installing the drive since NVME support came latter versions of macOS.

Do your homework first and prepare all the software ahead of time before buying an M.2 and swapping storage. There aren't any instructions with this, and there are several things needed:1. RESEARCH! buy a compatible M.2 (not all M.2 are equal - macrumors forum has a long table with many details: 'macrumors pcie ssd nvme ahci' and 'macrumors upgrading macbook pro m.2 nvme')2. make a backup of your Mac (Time Machine is the easiest)3. update your firmware (clean install of newest MacOS is quickest/easiest way to do this)4. swap the Apple SSD with this suckoo adapter and the M.25. boot with CMD+OPT+SHIFT+R to original internet recovery6. restore backup from Time MachineSome things to note that while all my M.2 were compatible (as in, the Mac was able to boot from them), several M.2 ran noticeable hotter than others, greatly reducing the battery life of my already short-life MBP. All the M.2 that I tried performed better than the original Apple SSD. According to the charts, I plan to eventually upgrade to a Crucial P2 or P3 2TB for the better battery life.

My mother got a new M2 Macbook and gave me her old (2013?) Macbook Air A1465 to mess around with. The model she ordered was not the top-of-the line with only 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. Since I plan to dual boot MacOS and Linux on it, the 128GB was not going to cut it. This adaptor works a charm with my M.2 drives! After taking the shell off the Macbook (Will differ for whatever model you have) installing this is super easy. Just remove the screw holding in the Apple SSD, remove the drive, put your new M.2 drive into this adaptor (I had to use a little bit of force to get it to fully seat) and then replace the drive you removed with the M.2 drive + adaptor and put the screw back in. Super simple. My drive showed up immediately and I used the network reinstall to get MacOS reinstalled. Installing the adaptor + drive only took about 5 minutes. My only quibble with this product is getting the M.2 drive into the adaptor. The first time I tried, I did not seat the drive fully and it was clear when I installed it in the Macbook that it wasn't fully seated as the screw cutout on the drive did not line up with the screw boss to hold down the drive. Pulling the drive back out of the Macbook and pressing the drive into the adaptor harder finally got it to slide in fully. If you want to keep an older Macbook going and increase its' storage? This is a no brainer. For ~$60 you can get this and a 1TB drive or ~$110 you can get this and a 2TB drive.
