Why is are PVC fitting sockets bigger than their named size?
PVC sizes get their name from the inner diameter of the PVC pipe as they are nominal, or 'in name only'. If you add the thickness of the wall on each side of the pipe, the outside diameter of the PVC pipe will always be larger that the actual PVC size.

Important PVC Size Information
This External Furniture Grade PVC End Cap will fit over the end of standard 1-1/2" Size Schedule 40 plumbing-grade or Furniture Grade PVC pipe, which has an outside diameter of 1.900" or 1-7/8".

How to Use PVC External End Caps
Where to use PVC Pipe Caps
External PVC End Caps are prominently used as feet in most projects, ideally because they provide a perfectly flat surface even when PVC pipe is not cut uniformly. They can also be used to top PVC pipe segments for decorative purposes.
Connect the External PVC Cap to the Pipe
Align the PVC pipe with the End Cap and press it into place onto the pipe. If preferred, you can use clear PVC cement for a secure and permanent fit. Apply a small amount inside of the inner cap.
Tap into Place
Tap the End Cap onto the end of the PVC Pipe until it is fully seated over the pipe.
