GEARWRENCH has taken the ratcheting wrench design and applied it to the tap and die application. The ratcheting handles and adapters allow for easy back and forth movement required while cutting threads on either taps or dies. The 5° ratcheting arc with reversing lever eliminates hand over hand turning. The hex die adapters work on either round or hex shaped dies.

A specialised tap and die wrench system, specifically for use in tight areas with limited access to turn the handle. Appears to be high quality and well made from a named brand.

Couple notes, i'm using the large (1 7/8) adaptor), has a set screw. I don't find the ratchet fliping switch bothersome. I'm putting a thread on a lot of 5x8 carbon steel rods in the ground so i can add a coupler, this is weighty, starts the thread easily (bevel the rod), and in a tight space once it gets going it's easy to one hand it. and flip switch to reverse and clear the threads, that does add a bit of fidding time but not that bad.So far i'm on about the 10th rod and no issues. I can see how the mechanism could break if you're forcing things but go easy, reverse and clear the thread it's not under much stress in my case.

I'm giving it 5 stars because the ratchet is a great idea for a tap and die holder. But, and there seems to always be a "but" doesn't there. The design for this tool was not well thought out if the guide to align the die was intended to precede the die. When cutting threads on new stock, you need to put quite a bit of pressure to get the die to start cutting. If you use the tool with the die in front, the die holder works fine, but if you use the guide option to align the die with the stock that you are cutting, the die holder pops out of the handle when pressure is applied.Well, the die holder needs some sort of locking mechanism on the holder if you are going to use the guide. The tool is well worth having, it works great if you do not intend to use the guide. This is well worth the money, but the guide is useless, considering the design.

The tool looked like it was beat up a bit before being chromed, or if it was after chrome, the chrome is in good shape. The die holder is very tight on some of my dies. The smaller set was in very nice shape but this one looked more like a second. The cases are nice, but way larger than needed, so I put the tools in a drawer in my box dedicated to taps, handles, etc. By purchasing the small and large set separate and the adapters separate, I saved $70 over getting the big kit with all the parts from gearwrench. That doesn't make any sense, but if you want both handle sizes to cover all the common taps and dies, look close.

Lovely piece of very functional kit in a spacious case with room for my commonly used drills and taps.

The tap & die connector that GearWrench uses is, fortunately, exactly the same connector type known as "Pass-Thru Vortex" from GearWrench, Apex, Draper, KD, and Crescent Tools, aka "Max Axess" from Craftsman. So, if you're looking for a way to convert a typical old 3/8" square drive socket connector to "Pass-Thru Vortex" and back, this is what you want. The 3/8" male to Vortex male adapter is easily found in many sets that GearWrench offers, but as of the time of this writing, I could only find the 3/8" female to Vortex female adapter in this set.The 3/8" male to Vortex male adapter has a release button (on the Vortex end) to free a tool connected to the 3/8" drive side. They work wonderfully, and seem well made.

For those of us who must hand tap this is a very nice set of tools. Ratcheting mechanisms seem to be of quality and the set covers a large variety of sizes. I've used various pieces numerous times and have been very pleased. Much better than hand over hand.

I'll be honest, in the past I've bought really low quality taps/dies and related accessories. My thinking was that I wouldn't use them much so why bother? well, the few times I've had to use the low quality stuff, it got me in more trouble than it helped. so i finally decided i needed to get a decent quality tap/die kit that would also be versatile. I've always liked gearwrench stuff and so I decided on this brand. I didn't want to buy the "sets" since I wanted to piece together a kit of my own that used taps/dies from another brand. so I got this kit, which are just the drive tools.since owning it, i've had to use it several times already and every time it's been a pleasure! not only that, but the accessories from my "pass-thru" socket set from Gearwrench are compatible with these tools. So, for example, I was able to use the 3" extension with this in a situation where had I not, I would not have enough clearance to use the handle in a meaningful way (since this ratchets, I would have been able to use it a little bit, but the extra clearance made it much easier by using the extension). the fact that the accessories for the "pass-thru" sets work with this make it even more versatile to use in situations where clearance is hard to find. this fact by itself really makes this set invaluable when you find yourself in situations where you're not able to remove a part and work on it on a bench or ideal setting. conversely, you can use the ratcheting handle in this set with the "pass-thru" sockets to fasten down nuts and bolts too...i decided to combine this set with the Irwin Hansen PTS (performance threading system) taps and dies and they work perfectly! I recommend getting this set, the gearwrench pass-thru socket sets, and the Irwin Hansen PTS taps/dies and you'll pretty much be able to cut threads and/or re-chase threads in almost any situation.
