Why every home must have a generator interlock kit?

Interlock Kit Installation Steps
1.With the power off. place the bottom plate the one with 3 holes over the top left breaker and mark the location with a pen in the bottom plateholes.
2.Remove the panel cover from the circuit breaker panel and dril the three holes marked on the panel cover using the 3/16" drll bit provided.
3.Insert the screws from the back of the cover plate, install the botom plate and top plate to the front cover plate of the circuit breaker panel. fix withnuts, make sure there is enough space for the top plate to pull freely.
4.Combine the zip ties into a loop and install the zip ties around the top circuit breaker in the pane
5. Place warning labels in appropriate locations.
6.As shown, the main breaker is open and the generator breaker is closed and cannot be opened.

I mistakenly bought this for my almost 40 year old Challenger panel by mistake as it has 7/8 spacing. IF your capable it can be modified with some effort to work with the 7/8 spacing. Go slowly and it will work. IF you're not well equipped tool wise might be best to try and find one for your panel. Get out the checkbook as what i found was few and far between as well as $$$$

I installed a portable generator feed to an unused 220 breaker in my electrical box. This device will prevent back feeding into the main line after a major power outage. The locking device drops down to prevent the main power breaker to be switched on. The instruction and the provided drill bit made the installation easy. I tested the interlock and it worked perfectly. I also like the stickers that warn anyone from disengaging the lock without first disengaging the generator making it a failsafe lockout. Being from the south and used to frequent hurricanes, I would highly recommend this device to protect your house and the people working on reconnecting service after a storm outage.

This is a good fitting interlock kit that performs well. Easy to install and will add safety to your home if you are using a whole home generator. Good kit.
