I purchased this mess kit new when it was available. The new kits usually sold out very fast so you have to buy it as soon as it is available. I have shopped around many local military surplus stores and found that new genuine GI issue kits are very rare. Most of the used kits found in those surplus stores are in very bad conditions but cost almost as much. The kit I received was in excellent condition but came in a gallon sized ziploc bag, not the manufacturer cardboard box shown in the product photo. I will assume that it is new.

Although the product is advertised as used, the pan has several dents and will not close properly. Buyers beware. Better off paying full price for new in the box item. Not worth the money.

US GI issue. Several small dents but has character. Satin finish typical of 1960's or later production. Have WW2 and a mid 50's made. They have a smoother or polished finish. However the earlier made ones handles where sloppier and did not fit together real well. Have to remember that main purpose of the design was being served at a field kitchen and not cooking. They could be used to heat up the "C" rations entree which is precooked. This was usually canned pork and beans, spaghetti and meatballs and pork patties and gravy. just cooked it long enough for the congealed grease to melt. These are made for individual use, not a family of four. keep the fire low and maybe hold it off the heat source and will work well. Must have mit or glove. Have used these a lot over the years. It's not the pans fault it's the operator when it comes to cooking while camping. to much direct heat and it will burn. these do heat up fast and do good with small portions.

As mess kits go this one is a little unique so your Tiger Scout won't lose it easily. It is very sturdy and cleans up well. Three sets of camping spoon-fork-knife fit well inside. I personally would prefer to eat out of a bag, my hands or just about anything but this, but if it's handy my wife and I have been known to borrow and share the halves before or after he eats. So, overall nice looking, functional and good to have around if you have to.

I've got several genuine issue mess kits that we use for car camping, and this one that we bought as a Christmas gift since the surplus store is just such an un-handy hour drive from the house. This one is functionally and aesthetically identical to the genuine article to my eyes, and about the same price. I also included some reproduction GI cutlery, which can't be beat, and was more impressive to the boy who received it than the mess pan/plate.

The mess kit comes as pictured. the design is simple, and I imagine it lasting me practically forever. however I must admit I feel a bit cheated as this product is in fact aluminum and NOT STAINLESS STEEL as is described. I likely would have abstained from purchasing this mess kit had I known it was made from aluminum.

The exterior of the kit (sealed in plastic) was dirty, scratched and had some minor dents. I question whether it is, in fact, a "new" item as described. Kit was (and still is) VERY difficult to open - it seems that the pan and plate shapes are slightly misaligned. The far edge of the spoon is rough as if it has seen some major wear. And the "dirt" around the edges is odd as the item was sealed in a plastic bag.Two veteran friends and a few non-vet friends have checked it out and all of their first reactions were to question the "new" condition of this item.However... it appears to be genuine US Military issue, quite durable, and capable of performing my intended tasks... perhaps with a little physical adjustment to the fitment of the pieces (and a quick cure the rattle of the utensils). At the price I paid for the mess kit, I don't feel cheated or angry - just a bit disappointed that a supposedly "new" item wasn't in better condition. As to the question of materials... All pieces responded attractively to a magnet so they are not aluminum or cheap pewter knock-offs. The item I received is at least a steel alloy, and I strongly suspect it is stainless steel as described.

Mine arrived dirty with a few dings. A trip to the garage for a ball ping hammer and then into the dishwasher and it is as good as new. It's what I expected for made in America. Built to last. This thing still has another 50 years left of campfire cooking in it I'm sure. It's tough so dont' be afraid to literally bang the dents out. Get one for your adventures. It's great for cooking eggs, warming up chile, an MRE, making pankakes, and whatever else you like. It is the best mess kit on the planet. I know because I've tried them all from ultralight to Iron skillets. This thing will serve the backpacker well. It gives you the ability to hunt with a .22 like the Kel tec su .22 and cook food you didn't have to pack in. This is how it saves weight. Get out there and see the wilderness and stay safe. You'll need this piece of kit along with a canteen cup and a can opener. A scouring pad comes in handy for cleaning but you can use sand as well. The scouring pad aka steel wool makes it easy and it's so light why not bring one? [...]/andrewsheldonreeves
