I am pleased to find this is a solid, well-made tool, as I have become tired of buying other products which break in a short amount of time. I imagine this product has been coated in oil to prevent corrosion (like a higher-quality metal part would be?). I took a shop rag and easily wiped off the excess--it didn't seem prudent to me to remove all lubrication from every inch of a metal tool that has moving parts. It opens to a width of about 14-3/4", which would mark a circle about 29-1/2" in diameter.

Super tool - will last forever - deducted one star because I immediately pinched my finger when closing this and due to the weight it was harder to open and get my skin out, and the edges of the hinge area are super sharp - I had to make a cap to keep from getting so easy hurt again. But other than that it is even better than expected based on the reviews. A high quality item but it should come with a protective cap over the top.- would cost only pennies if made in India.

Yes, it's coated in disgusting oil, but a few minutes with some dish detergent and a brush is all you need. Some reviewers said that it is not well made. In my humble opinion, it is a work of art and deserves a special place in your tool box. This instrument is LARGE and rather weighty. It will last several lifetimes if you take care of it and keep it dry.

If you demand the highest precision, quality and made-in-Germany finish, then this compass is not for you. If you want a tool that doesn't break the bank, does the job and will probably last a long time, then it is.First, the measurements: the compass is 31.5 cm (12.4 in) long, 30.5 cm (12 in) from the point to the center of the pivot. It opens to slightly under 90 degrees, and has a maximum point-to-point distance (i.e. the radius of the circle you're going to draw) of 38 cm (15 in). Since the pencil holder is on the outside, the maximum radius with a pencil is a little over 39 cm (15.5 in). The pencil holder fits a standard pencil with very little play. Something much larger such as a carpenter's pencil or a sharpie will not fit. It is adjustable down to a very small size, so even a very thin pen or pencil will be held in place securely. Now, to the quality of the tool: it's made of steel and it seems reasonably precise for carpentry, woodworking and similar jobs. It is, however, not a "high end" or "precision" tool. The points align pretty well, but not perfectly. The machining marks are clearly visible everywhere on the tool. The action is perfectly usable but not too smooth, and the holes for the thumbscrews are slightly crooked. The pencil holder is not perfectly aligned. Note that none of these influences the functionality of the tool - it will draw round circles just fine. The tool came coated in a badly smelling, dark oil - I'm almost certain that it is used engine oil. I had to spend some time wiping it off with white gas.All in all, it's pretty good for the price, and it will do the job fine, but it won't be the tool you show off to your friends (if you have the kind of friends that are impressed by tools).

This is a great compass for drawing larger circles with accuracy. It is heavy duty and you can use a pencil instead of drafting lead. They come in three sizes, 8", 12", 16". The 8" makes sufficiently large circles for most construction and superior to ARVIN compasses. The 16" compass reminds me of a sword and probably would be banned in public schools, just as they have banned everything else. However, my advice is to keep your kids at home and teach them yourself.

for the price you can't beat it but it has a couple of design issues.1) it would be nice if the pencil holder was alittle bigger2) when you use a pencil the most you ca compress it is about a 1" because the pencil holder is not angleed in
