This split housing allows it to be take apart and the components can be replaced when worn or damaged. It solidly locks in the variety of replaceable insert faces. The faces are made of several different durable materials; from soft rubber to medium hard plastic to hard nylon. Halder also offers aluminum and copper faces for hitting very hard surfaces such as hardened steel (copper faces are only compatible with Halder Simplex with reinforced cast iron housing; call for details).

This is, obviously, rather pricey for a mallet. That being said, the design is excellent. This has replaced my go-to Vaughn mallet, which isn’t any slouch of a tool. I like the balance of the mallet, which I very much toward the head, providing more momentum if needed. Halder mallets have truly replaceable head faces, which are easily found for purchase. Others that state that theirs are replaceable also but I’ve never seen them offered for sale. (The head faces are also over 30% larger on the Halder over the Vaughn). As far as replacement parts, it appears that every component can be purchased individually to either modify the tool for different material use or repair (though I can’t seeing a head breaking under all but the most extreme use). This purchase was for the Simplex 40 model, though the basics are identical for the smaller Simplex 30 that I also own and rely upon.

The hammer may be fine by the product page is says the hammer has a plastic handle when in fact it is a wooden handle. Unfortunately this inaccuracy led to my having to return the hammer which appeared to be fine. In short, hammer probably fine but product listing is not.
