I didn't really need a new blender. My old one worked fine. But it *was* old. Ancient. And it has a plastic container. So a glass jar was a healthwise upgrade. I jumped at the chance to order this Hamilton Beach PowerMax Professional-Performance Blender.Little did I know how wimpy my old blender was. This thing is amazing. I wouldn't be surprised if it could shred nails (well, okay, maybe I would be). But you get the idea. One significant issue keeps me from rating it higher than 4 stars. It's really difficult to get clean. For some reason, the manufacturer designed it so that the plastic insert that holds the blades doesn't fit snugly into the bottom of the jar. Food gets stuck in the tiny space around the perimeter. The only way I can think of to be sure you get it absolutely clean is to take the jar apart entirely, clean the blade apparatus, then put it back together again. That's kind of a big deal so I'm trying to just soak it right now, hoping that that will work. So, great on power, but not so much on cleaning.

This is a big blender made of quality materials. The bowl is made of thick glass, and the lid seems to be sturdy. It can hold a large amount of fruit. The easy-pour spout (a small part of the lid near the spout that opens separately from the lid itself) is useful when it comes to pouring thinner liquids. However, it is hard or sometimes even impossible to pour thicker smoothies out of it. That said, I do have a tendency to make very thick smoothies. Also, the lid itself is a little tricky to get on and off one-handed. That’s good because it means it fits well and won’t spill, but becomes inconvenient if you’re trying to steady the blender with one hand and open the lid with the other. I suppose that’s why the pour spout would come in handy. With thicker liquids the size of the blender does become a slight problem. The mouth is so wide that when you take off the lid, thicker liquids pour too widely to fit in a standard-sized cup. Smoothie ends up pouring outside of the cup, which is annoying and messy. It would be nice if there were a larger easy-pour spout. However, this problem is avoided by making thinner smoothies. The blender seems pretty powerful, so long as you remember to use enough liquid. It crushed fruit straight from the freezer very quickly and without much difficulty. It is fairly loud compared to my other blender, but I suppose you can’t have everything. When the motor is running for a prolonged period of time, especially on higher settings, I get concerned by the somewhat overworked sound it makes. But then, if you remember to use enough liquid, you shouldn’t have to run it for too long at once. The markings on the sides of the bowl are nice. They make it easy to measure/estimate how much I’ve added to the blender without having to get my measuring cups dirty. It is notable that the base that holds the blades does screw onto the bowl, but the bowl does NOT screw on to the blender stand itself—it simply goes on by lining it up with the indentation in the stand and letting it settle straight down. This is important to remember because if you’re like me and are used to blenders that unscrew from the stand, you will have to remember NOT to turn this blender when removing it, since that could disconnect the base from the bowl and get your smoothie everywhere. It seems like a quality blender with a huge capacity (in fact, the capacity is probably excessive for someone who generally only cooks for themselves. I think it would make more than enough for a family of five if I filled it to the top). It is powerful enough to crush frozen fruit without having to wait for it to thaw, which is convenient. And although it is rather loud, as long as you use enough liquid, you shouldn’t be running it for too long. Unless you plan on making excessively thick drinks that don’t pour easily, I would recommend this blender.

I’ve used a lot of blenders over the years, and this has to be the most powerful one I’ve ever tried. It’s larger than any I’ve ever owned, and that’s a good thing. When assembled, it’s roughly a foot and a half tall. It’s also nice and heavy. I don’t have to worry about it vibrating off the counter; it stays where I put it. This Hamilton Beach blender is up to any task I’m likely to use it for.I compost all my vegetable scraps into small, easy-to-break-down particles that decompose fairly quickly. I had a bunch of cantaloupe rinds that I wanted to compost. As it was, it would take forever to cut it up by hand. I figured it would be a great test for my blender, so I filled the pitcher to the 48 ounce line with rind, added enough water to grind it, and within seconds, the blender reduced the cantaloupe rind to compostable size. I drained off the water and put the cantaloupe in my compost container. This machine took this task in stride without straining the motor or even vibrating on the counter as if it was all in a day’s work.I like making recipes that call for puréeing the cooked ingredients, so this blender will be perfect. I especially like that the blender jar is glass. Plastic stains easily, scratches with use, and doesn’t do overly well with boiling liquids like soup. This glass pitcher solves all those problems. The way the cutting blade and jar collar is designed is also ideal. The base of the blender jar is wide with the cutting blade and collar being in separate pieces, making it easy to wash and dry. The gears are steel rather than plastic which means it will hold up to just about any task.I’m very pleased with this workhorse and recommend it to other shoppers.
