Product Description

Plant based Madder Root used for natural dye of handmade lokta paper madder wrapping paper

Vintage Lokta Printer Paper - Handmade in Nepal

Handcrafted in the Himalayas and used anciently for sacred texts, Lokta paper has been a staple of Nepalese artisans for centuries.

The paper is made from Lokta bushes which grow on the southern slopes of the Nepali Himalayas between 5,250 and 13,000 feet. When properly cut, the bushes can produce three to eight new, fast-growing shoots making Lokta paper one of the most sustainable, tree-free papers.

Also called Nepali Paper, Lokta paper is used for many official Nepali government documents. Lokta fibers are "cooked" in vats to soften and create a pulp that is spread over wood-framed screens and set to dry in the Himalayan sun.

The paper is hand made in the rural, high altitude villages of Nepal and then carried down the Himalayas using the traditional paths and pack animals (donkeys) for transport. The fine texture from the screens can be seen and felt in the finished product adding to the beauty and uniqueness of the paper.

Lokta paper is acid-free and is widely regarded as one of the world’s finest hand-made papers.

Natural Madder Root Vegetable Dye for a Beautiful Color

Madder root is one of the oldest plant dyes in the world, used for centuries in Turkey, Iran, and India and is used to give the paper its distinctive color.

The Alizarin pigment in the root is the compound that helps produce the beautiful color of the lokta paper. A little goes a long way in giving the paper its earthen color as it takes to the lokta paper.

Handmade Lokta Paper from Nepal

Preserving an Ancient Paper-Making Tradition

The oldest known surviving Lokta paper is a religious text, a copy of the Karanya Buha Sutra Buddhist text estimated to be 1,000 to 1,900 years old.

Lokta paper crafting in Nepal has been handed down to each new generation of paper makers to the present day where lokta paper continues to be handcrafted.

Thank you for supporting a 1,000-year-old paper-making tradition in Nepal.

I love this paper but honestly I wish that the canadian amazon had better price and quantity. If you go on dot com, the paper is so much cheaper, and you find more of the same with many packs available.

I love paper a lot. These pages are lovely, with natural fibers showing and each sheet is unique, which I love. They take up water/ink well and hold up (mostly) to me spraying and painting on them. I don't plan on printing on them so haven't tried that.

This is the third unique product I have purchased from this seller and each is just as, if not more stunning than the previous purchase. Specifically, this paper does very well in my laserjet printer as well as my writing and cutting machine. The quality and consistency is beautiful. I searched for quite a long time to discover this particular paper and seller and it was so worth it. If you are considering purchasing this paper, you absolutely should. I would buy it again and again.

I don't recommend it because There are many pieces of garbage stuck to it. I think that when the paper is left in the sun to dry, these pieces are stuck to it and it is not usable for me at all.

The paper was beautiful, although the color was not what I had hoped it would be. The paper was only packed in a shipping bag without any support inside, so the corners were bent which could be a problem when printing.

I bought this as back up paper to create wedding table assignment cards. I also ordered Handmade Lokta Card Stock 5x7 Inch Paper with Deckle Edge, which was my 1st choice but was unsure if that paper would work. It did, so I ended up not using this, but this paper would work great in laser or inkjet. It looks wonderful and was smooth.

This paper is absolutely gorgeous, I love the subtle texture. It can be printed on, but it is too translucent for double sided printing. Writing with a regular ink pen will also show through on the back side. This paper is resistant to folding, and is difficult to work with. When I tried to fold this paper evenly down the middle, it kept wrinkling. I would recommend this paper if you want something luxurious and unique, but not to anyone who wants to print double-sided or fold it crisply down the middle.

I am using this paper as stationary and it turned out better than expected. The sheets are somewhat thick, but very soft. Pens do not bleed through unless you are using a sharpie or something. I have had people express how much they like the paper because it feels authentic. It comes in plastic packaging so it will not be damaged by moisture in transit. Overall, a great purchase and I look forward to ordering more.

I am very impressed with this paper. I'll be using it for marketing materials for my ETSY business. Running a botanical skincare line, these have the natural and organic feel I need. Knowing that small village people in Nepal (probably buddhist) made this, makes it feel almost sinful to use such gorgeous handmade paper for such shallow purposes. I'd rather be writing poetry or meaningful things on these! I hope that this little business in Nepal will continue to ship their beautiful paper to Amazon so that people can enjoy this high quality and organic Lokta paper. Thank you to the creators of this paper! Blessings to all of you.

This stuff is amazing. It handles perfectly in the printer, feels exactly like I want, and because it's ever so slightly translucent, it lets a but of my background paper color though that makes everything look more matched and intentional. Such a good price for the quality of product.
