Background: often I clip my aerial silks to large welded shackles on ceiling beams. My previous XL Omega offset-D carabiner's gate just barely fits over the bulky shackles. This means a lot of fumbling at 20ft to detach the apparatus. Furthermore, the carabiner basket rests slightly askew on the large shackle, causing off-axis loading. Moreover, the shackle is steel which grinds and corrodes an aluminum 7075 carabiner. Steel on steel is better. So this scaffolding hook is perfect for me, because the gate is so large. After handling climbing carabiners for years, the massiveness of the hook was astounding. This is fully two pounds of steel and 3x the size of any belay carabiner a mountaineer would handle. I would consider buying another just to impress people.Note I believe this hook is more properly called a "Ladder Hook", since a typical scaffold hook has a pear-shaped basket. This basket is more L-shaped for affixing to pipes and rungs, like firemen might use on a ladder. I'm guessing the major axis is still closest to the spine, but would have to contact US Rigging to be sure. Hence somewhat concerned my apparatus will slide away from the spine due to the flat basket - still need to check this out. At least for D-carabiners, nose-loading only reduces the breaking strength by a few kN so it may not matter. Here the gate alone is rated to 16 kN, so this works for me in any configuration.Again, this hook appears quite strong, it's minimum breaking strength (MBS) of "only" 50kN seems underrated. I would guess it is higher and would definitely trust it for a 5:1 safe working load (SWL) of 10kN. Of course, in aerial silks the nylon tissu are the weaker link so not relevant to me.The spring-loaded twist lock also has a good function. Before ordering I was concerned about fiddling with the gate screw one-handed at 20ft up but it snaps back and forth effortlessly with just the twist of two fingers. It does not require sliding the sheath, only twisting. As a warning, note the gate sleeve is very large and is more likely to ensnare (say) a loose shirt when rigging. Note Omega makes a similar hook with side-swing gate, that innovation would likely increase this gate size even more, perhaps to 62mm.As a cool bonus, the hook also includes a capture eye pin for keeping your apparatus fast to the major axis. This was not mentioned in the description but is an awesome bonus. I'm guessing the capture eye pin installation is permanent though so probably will not install it. No sharp edges anywhere and the zinc finish is pretty. It arrived with a small scuff to the finish in one corner, so I sprayed silicone there.Overall I'm excited about replacing my carabiner with this hook, as well as being able to anchor to unconventional mount points such as bridges or pipes without needing a span set. Note in the photo below I've added vinyl puddenings on the hook to reduce grinding between the aluminum rescue 8 descender.PS One other benefit of this hook's size: I can write name and email address in paint pen right on the spine!
