- A heat sink is a passive heat exchanger that transfers heat generated by an electronic or mechanical device, thereby helping to regulate the temperature of the device to optimal levels. In computers, heat sinks are used to cool central processing units or graphics processors. Heat sinks are used with high power semiconductor devices such as power and optoelectronic transistors such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), where the heat dissipation capacity of the component itself is insufficient to moderate its temperature.

I needed a heatsink to go on the side of a chunky USB power supply that used to get so hot you could smell it from the next room. Not good. This heatsink just needed to have a little bit of its length cut off, which took a few moments with a hacksaw. I used a pair of long wire ties to fix it in place on the side of the power supply, and it works beautifully.Hundreds of uses, etc, etc. Some sellers want a fortune for a little piece of aluminum, but this was sold at a good price.
