Handy addition to my daughter's farrier kit. She's the main caretaker of the horses and sees to all their needs. Well made, sturdy tool that should be in any horse owner's arsenal of tools. It's not heavy but it's heavy duty and should last her a long time.

These hoof testers may work for casual users who have only small horses or ponies. They are sturdy enough, though mine came with dried grease (?) at the pivot point (see image). However, they have some significant use issues. First, the jaws do not open widely enough to span the heel bulbs of more than a keg shoe size 1 hoof. That alone severely limits their usefulness by veterinarians (disclosure: I am an equine veterinarian). Second, the contact surface is not quite rough/spiky enough to grab the hoof wall effectively to allow firm pressure to be applied. Third, the handles are laterally flattened instead of dorsoventrally flattened, meaning that the thin edges of the handles are digging into your hands as you apply pressure, which is uncomfortable. For clarity, I have always used hoof testers such as these and I use them two-handed since as a female I cannot apply sufficient pressure using one-handed (sliding-jaw) hoof testers.

If you ride enough, at some point you'll have a horse come up lame. And who wants to wait for the farrier/trimmer or to pay for the vet to come out when hoof testers can give you a place to start.I've put off buying them for years, but these came up at a good price, and they're perfect to keep in my trailer with my trimming tools. They come in a little carrying bag/case so you can keep the bulk of dirt/dust off of them.

This hoof tester is considerably lighter than nippers or clinch cutters. Since it doesn't need to apply very much force, there's no point in making it heavier than necessary. The pincers come together cleanly and evenly so you'll know that you're applying pressure exactly where you're trying to test.Chrome vanadium steel is what most wrenches are made of so you know this tool is strong, durable and corrosion resistant.

My son is a farrier and he said these are pretty nice for testing for hoof abscesses quick and general use. It's a general tool that doesn't vary a lot by brand, but he said these are made well, a decent price, and are of a pretty good heavy steel. He believes they are pretty durable and will last a long time. The storage bag is also a plus so it's not just flopping around in other bags and become loose in the intersection of the 2 pieces.
