Printers are the bane of my life! They work, they don't work... OEM consumables cost a fortune but non-OEM often fail. They connect wirelessly, or they don't. Having decided to send 3 older printers (a mono laser, colour laser & colour inkjet) to the printer cemetery I needed to buy something to replace them. It was with some trepidation I ordered this printer but decided to pay a little extra for an HP branded product. It arrived next day and was unpacked, plugged in, and printing wirelessly within 10 minutes of receipt. I almost cried tears of relief. The printer comes with a mini-toner cartridge which is good for a few hundred pages. I immediately purchased the XL HP toner cartridge ready for when the one supplied fails. Being able to print wirelessly from a phone, tablet or laptop is really handy. I had to change the driver to one that allowed double sided printing but other than that this has been the easiest printer install ever. Highly recommended.

I reviewed quite a few printers here on Amazon before deciding to try this one. It has a nice appearance, it's light weight, performs nicely and I am quite pleased with my choice. At first I was hesitant because of all the critical reviews, but felt that maybe some were unfair, and that maybe some purchasers get too easily frustrated if setup does not go perfectly. Sometimes it just takes some patience. The one negative for me has nothing to do with the printer itself; it is the documentation and directions for setup. The documentation is printed on a folded sheet included with the printer, and is in many languages, and the layout is poor. If you are not familiar with your computers operating system or basics of setting up a printer on WiFi, you may find the instructions of little assistance. But basically after downloading the printer driver directly from HP, the printer connected effortlessly as the software ran on my Mac. It has worked perfectly for about 2 weeks now, and I have had no problems at all with WiFi disconnection. Sleep/wake mode has worked perfectly so far with no interruptions. Here are my honest evaluations of the machine 2 weeks after setup:SETUP: I had no difficulty, but I am a Mac user very familiar with Apple's OS and WiFi connections. To be fair, as I mentioned above, I got an immediate WiFi connection after simply running the downloaded HP driver software, following setting up the printer, and turning it on.PRINTING: The test page printed perfectly, as have following pages. I found that in order to keep the paper from feeding and printing crooked, it is important to align the paper carefully, and not too tightly between the adjustable paper guides. If they are too tight or too loose, you may have difficulty with feed, making it crooked or causing a jam. I also adjusted the darkness of the print from the default 3, to 4, in the Mac printer dialogue and it looks perfect to me. Pages print at a good speed for a home office, assuming you are not printing hundreds at a time.FAXING: This machine does not have a fax capability.COPYING: Works well and copies are clear and very legible.AUTOMATIC DOCUMENT FEEDER/SCANNER: I have used the feeder for scanning text to PDF and it worked perfectly. CAVEAT: I did not download, nor will I use, the HP software for scanning of any type. I have been a user of Hamrick's ViewScan software for over 15 years. This company makes an excellent product for thousands of printers/scanners and if you have trouble with the HP scanner software you may want to give VueScan a try: https://tinyurl.com/y8y3zcz4NOISE: A little noisy when going through the printing process (duh), but not overly noisy. Quiet as a church mouse when asleep.DOCUMENTATION: Again, I would have to rate the included setup documentation as poor. I think this is fairly ubiquitous with electronic hardware anymore, though. There is a downloadable PDF manual on HP's website that is somewhat better to use as a reference.OVERALL: I wouldn't hesitate recommending this printer to friends/family. To me it's a winner.

It works well with good quality. Setup was simple: remove the packaging, plug everything in, power it on, and execute the setup software. The sw auto detected the printer on the network, installed the driver and scanner software. I installed on two other computers (in total so far: 1 Windows, 2 x Macs) All installed and worked without a hitch.I did a couple of Airprints from an iPhone without a hitch. No hoops had to be jumped through.Scanning was simple and provided several file formats to save the scan to.I previously used a Canon MFP. I had to go to the printer and manually select the mode (printer, copy, scanner). With this HP, I just do what I need to do (e.g. scan or print) and the sw puts it into the mode I need without having to select a specific mode separately, as one would expect. All this for $129 for a network printer that can also do Airprint seamlessly. I think that is a pretty good value.I noticed a lot of the 1 star reviews were complaints about this printer not doing things it wasn't designed to do, e.g. print in color. Why would that person expect such a low price point laser multifunction network printer print in color, and it is clearly not advertised as a color printer? For me, I checked whether it could do all that I require (laser print for speed and cost, color scan, auto feed of documents to scan, auto duplex print, print/scan from a network, autoduplex print, Airprint) before ordering it. Now that I have it, I found that it does all and does all well and simply I can't say the same of my previous Canon MFP.I am an engineer myself. I applaud HP for a very well designed and executed product.

I almost didn't buy this printer because of all the nightmare installation stories. But thanks to X. Wang's review I took a chance, figuring I could follow his instructions, which I did. The installation went like a charm. Done in 10 minutes without a hitch. I didn't even read the HP instructions, just did what he said (see below). I also installed the extra HP Easy Scan Software and it works just fine.As for the printer itself, I've only had it up and running for an hour, but it prints and scans just fine. I even tested the HP email to print, which worked great. I don't have a land line, so no faxing for me. For the price you can't beat it. I'm not concerned with the fact that there is no scan button. I never used the one on my old printer. The only drawback I can see is that I think it will automatically turn off in 4 hours (you can change this to 2 or 8, but not disable it). Once off I think you have to push the button on the printer to get it up and running again. I don't really like this, I'd rather it just sleep until I send a doc to print, but at the end of the day its not that hard to just push the button. So don't be put off by the installation nightmare reviews. Just follow X. Wang's instructions:"So, in all reality, it shouldn't be too difficult to set up the printer, even though HP's instructions are a bit of a nightmare. The main reason to go through their steps is to get the printer on the wireless network. They should read:Step 1: plug in printer to wall outletStep 2: wait for printer to initializeStep 3: install HP Easy Start via the URL provided in the Setup GuideStep 4: run the software and follow it through*----Step 4 is really the last one to get the printer on wireless. The next steps aren't really different from any printer installation of any sort.----Step 5: uninstall Easy Start if you preferStep 6: if you have other computers, add the printer per that operating system's normal instructions. If you're on wireless, the printer will have a complicated network name alongside its model name (M148xyz).Step 7, if needed: HP Easy Start does offer the choice to install about 300 MB of additional software, such as OCR (optical character recognition) software. It's the "full software installation" option during the installation process.Once installed, to print, simply select the printer. To scan, either open the Scan app (Windows 10) or search Spotlight for "scan" (Mac OS). The appropriate app will allow you to choose a scan filetype (e.g. PDF, PNG, TIFF, etc) and scan resolution. You can then process this file as you need to -- email, print, save, etc. HP Easy Start has some additional options that you* note that HP Easy Start includes two default settings that allow HP to monitor what the printer is doing. You can disable these during the installation process. Read the description of each service reporting data to HP and decide for yourself if you want the data to be collected and provided."
