I have a 3 horsepower Truper brand air compressor (claimed 4 hp starting -not something to be proud of). Anyway on a full tank of air it works pretty good, I used it to clean up a portable cement mixer that workers had not done a proper job cleaning. The pressure would drop as this tool really takes air and so it was a task best interspersed with other jobs. I also used it to remove paint and acrylic roof sealer and roughen up a join to old cement before applying adhesive and we poured an additional roof extension on our house in Mexico which has a cement roof. Don't forget the required ear protection , safety glasses and breathing masks as this is loud.Update, I have had this tool for a few years now and am still using it to clean up my electric cement mixer . We built a house using cement blocks and the mixer provided all the Mortor and Stucco. You will need a 3 hp air compressor if willing to wait for it to recuperate the air. It is a shame the next size up in air compressors adds about a $1000 dollars to the cost.

This thing really speeds up stripping heavy that and scale, saves a lot of time at the sandblaster. Its pretty obnoxious to use as it's basically a high speed air hammer with several small pins, but no other tool I've found can knock out rust and gunk in tight areas like this. Typical IR quality, very nice tool.

Removing frame rust off a ‘05 Toyota tundra (complete gong show of rotten frame undercoating used by Toyota). Used flap disks, wire wheels and those expensive mesh wheels the body guys use. Then I found this bad boy. Man was buying this thing a good decision. The good - tough, works well, easy to use. The bad but tolerable : vibration in your hand (don’t be dumb wear thick gloves), tool length because some spots can be hard to get into I.e getting up into a rear spring shackle mount (more open areas and the tool flies through rust removal). You need lots of air to run this tool. Like any air tool tank capacity and compressor recharge rates dictate how long the tool can be used before the air pressure drops. The instructions for spring tension levels I.e what settings to use are non-existent. I also like a manual with a parts guide and part numbers, in case you need to order parts,...also non existent. No regrets buying it. My local dealer sells the 135 for 1/3 more than Amazon price.

I am a professional engineer working on ships engaged on international voyages, I see Ingersoll Rand tools being used and abused daily and they stand up to the job. This tool is no exception, it is very well designed and built and although it is a bit more expensive than other brands out there, the money is well spent especially if it is going to be used for heavy duty jobs. Its a must have for any rust/pain removal job. My excavators are now rust free and newly painted, looking brand new.

This is a solid tool, and perform well. I've used it so far only for chipping off welding slag, and one small area of paint on a piece of steel tubing. This is the first needle scaler I've used, so don't have any basis for comparison to other brands. One minor complaint I had was that the so-called "instructions" had the usual loads of safety precautions, including a warning not to lubricate the tool with jet fuel (Wow! Who knew?), and the observation that "Air powered tools can vibrate in use." Really? Ohm'gosh! Well, now I know. However, there wasn't a single explanation for the purpose of the three spring-loaded detent positions, or how to decide which one might be best for a particular application. Nor was there any discussion about using the activation lever at less than the fully depressed position as a way of controlling the force of scaling impact. I sent an email query to Ingersol Rand's customer service / tech advice people, and got a nice reply, answering my two questions, and acknowledging that they were aware of the inadequacy of actual operating instructions, and their intention to rectify that.I haven't used the tool long enough to know how it will continue to perform over time, but everything about it seems to be of high quality. I'm using their proprietary oil lubricant as instructed, so assume that will prolong its service life.

I recently acquired a 2006 pickup truck for light use and outdoor adventures. As it had some frame rust beginning, I decided to embark on a refurbishing project to bring it back up to where it needs to be, and prevent further issues from developing. A big part of this is to remove all of the loose rust and scale from the metal surfaces, and then coat with a rust preventative urethane paint. (I used KBS Rust Seal https://www.amazon.com/KBS-Coatings-4401-Gloss-RustSeal/dp/B000I7VWI4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1507229217&sr=8-1&keywords=KBS and it works phenomenally.)After using an angle grinder with stiff wire brushes, I was wearing the wires out at a pretty good clip, and replacing them was getting expensive at $15 a pop. A friend of mine who is a welder recommended that I look into getting a Needle Scaler, which is a tool that I had never heard of before, but exists for this exact purpose. After doing a heavy amount of research, I decided that spending a little more for a better tool was worth it, as I hate to have tools break on me mid-project. Enter the Ingersoll Rand Needle Scaler. This thing absolutely demolishes rust and scale, to the point where I discovered rusty scale in areas that I had thought were perfectly fine. It gets straight down to the bare metal, leaving nothing behind.Form/Build:If this is "Standard duty" I can't imagine what a heavy duty scaler looks like. It weighs around 5 pounds, and is built like a tank. The only thing I needed to do when it arrived was purchase an air tool quick release attachment for the end, and put 3ccs of air tool oil inside it. It's all metal, solid as a rock, and is very high quality.Use:After Oiling the tool, I connected it to my air compressor and went to town on the rust. It absolutely pulverizes the rust right down to the metal. It does this through impact- each of the metal rods (the needle part) rapidly vibrates in and out, with maybe a 1/4 inch of movement. When pressed against the rusted metal, this breaks up and dislodges rusty scale, breaking it free. The rust fell away easily and it was easily 4x more efficient than the wire brushes and angle grinder were. After using it for an hour, I was actually a little upset that I had wasted so much time with a wire wheel in the first place. I found that for hard rust scale holding it directly perpendicular to the surface worked best, while in some situations holding it at more of an angle was better to dislodge material. You will find what works best in your situation. After using this tool, I went back to my wire wheels to do a little clean up, and remove the rest of the rust residue. While the scaler takes care of all the heavy stuff that is attached, it will not remove rust from lightly corroded surfaces very well, and this is where a wire wheel is best used.NOTE ON USE: As it is rapidly hammering a metal surface, it is VERY loud to operate. You will want ear protection on at all times, and because the rust flies off, you will also want eye protection as well. I used good work gloves, and would also recommend those.Instructions/care:The Instruction manual is useless, to be honest. It gives a diagram of how to set up an air tool, and which attachments are needed, but lacked any specifics in regards to the actual operation of the tool. It DID include a recommended oiling procedure, which is 3cc's before use, 3cc's after use, and another 3cc's after 4 hours of continuous use. I watched some youtube videos to get acquainted to how it functioned before I used it so I had an idea of what to expect.Overall:This is my new favorite tool. I wrote this review because of how little information was available on it online, and had trouble deciding on what to buy, and even what to look for. Without a doubt, this is the best tool for removing heavy corrosion and rust, and was well worth every penny that I paid. I have no reservations about its quality, and fully expect to have this wonderful little device for the rest of my life.

I bought this due to the product rating and due to the length of time that this product has been on the market. I use it for descaling steel semi-trailers with heavy rust, paint scaling, and heavy metal pitting. It works great. I was advised to buy the straight model versus the pistol grip model due to the straight scaler's ability to get into tighter places. I am not disappointed. Not that it matters to most, but this tool uses a large volume of air and the exhaust seems to come out somewhere around the paddle style trigger, so the tool is used best when trigger is on the bottom so as not to blow debris into operators face on a heavy descale job.
