  • A higher film build per coat, so you can work faster and use fewer coats
  • Offers excellent self-leveling, superb longevity and durability
  • Suitable for all internal and external woods, including oily timers suck as teak
  • Size: 1 Pint

Schooner Gold has been formulated using an optimized blend of premium UV absorbers, HALS and resins to ensure the product’s exceptional deep gloss and color are retained over the lifetime of the coating. Developed as a high gloss yacht varnish, with a traditional amber hue, our tests prove that the gloss retention of Schooner Gold outperforms other leading varnish products. Schooner Gold replaces our current Schooner product, where the higher build properties and improved self-leveling in this new formulation allow you to achieve a professional finish in 4-6 coats; sanding only between every other coat, reducing your work time. Formulated for use without the need for thinning in warm and higher temperature climates, Schooner Gold is suitable for all internal and external woods, and can be applied directly to oily timber, such as teak. Schooner Gold can also be used in a system with Clear Wood Sealer (YVA327/YVA328).

You get what you pay for, and this is a high quality varnish.

Amazing product! This was the first time I've ever varnished anything since 1986, so I followed the instructions and thinned the varnish per the instructions on the can. I didn't have any problems with the varnish drying or blushing, but that was probably in part due to the finishing environment of 45% relative humidity in my garage. I live in the deep south where it gets quite humid, so I have a good dehumidifier, heater and airconditioner for the garage /shop to use when needed. I used a Purdy Boar's bristle brush to apply the varnish and it laid down and dried so smooth that you'd swear that I sprayed it. I highly recommend this varnish.

I purchased this to refinish a small redwood pergola on our patio. I had previously refinished the pergola with an oil finish that did not last one season in southern California. So after disassembly and a thorough sanding I applied several coats of the Schooner Gold, carefully following the instructions and now my wood looks and feels great and seems to be handling the weather quite well.It is important to note that proper application of this product is not a quick process. After some experimentation I found it is important to thin the product as recommended (50% thinning initially) to achieve proper penetration of the wood; to sand carefully between coats to achieve a nice, smooth finish; and to let each coat dry thoroughly before each sanding (I waited 24 hours between coats). The product goes on easily and smoothly with a brush.

Used this to re-finish my mahogany front door. I selected the Interlux Interstain and Schooner Gold varnish (5 coats) because I know that they were designed for full sun exposure on boats. Most of the big name brand and big box store products are aromatic polyurethane based products which can't take sun exposure even though they are labeled for exterior use. Yes, this product is expensive; but I did not want my door to quickly deteriorate like the 2 previous professional refinish jobs on my door. One quart of varnish was the proper amount to refinish the exterior side of my door (the inside still looked good). I have enough left over for adding 1 or 2 coats when the door finish starts showing some age in 2 years. Interlux provides instructions for doing this; so the total life of the varnish will be extended even more.I followed the instructions and applied the 1st coat of varnish at 50% thinned with the Interlux #333 thinner. That coat did not want to dry. Interlux tech service (he called back very quickly) suggested that I lightly sand or steel wool the surface to tear open the film that had formed on the top surface of the varnish. That worked for the flat areas but not the routed moulding on the door. It was too thick in those crevices. There I had to use small detailing brass and plastic brushes; a plastic scraper, and working off and on for 6 hours while the door sat in the sun during an 85°F May afternoon to get the excess removed. The Interlux #333 thinner's label states that it "is a slow drying solvent" and "extends the drying"; no joke! I found that the 100% Schooner Gold dried in 1/3 to 1/2 the time of the thinned varnish. I had to wait 48 hours (including 6 hours in the hot Texas sun) for the thinned varnish to dry before applying the next coat of varnish. The 2nd and 3rd coats were 100% varnish and they dried well. I used a new Purdy Syntox brush and still had problems getting a smooth surface when the varnish dried. Used 220 grit sand paper and 00 steel wool to smooth up the surfaces before the 3rd & 4th coats; but only 000 steel wool before the 5th coat. The 4th coat I diluted 25% with normal mineral spirits and it gave a much better surface. I did a few test pieces and settled on a 50% dilution with mineral spirits using a foam brush for the 5th and final coating. The cheep foam brush did better than the expensive Purdy. This is what you see in the photo.I am happy with the final finish. I just wish that following the instruction with the Interlux #333 thinner did not cause me the problems that I experienced.

A high quality product. When used with the proper amount of "brushing fluid" it is easy to coat the woodwork multiple times in one day. Very high gloss. Will be ordering another quart to upgrade the interior teak on our Irwin 41.

As others noted, this is a challenge to apply without runs. It's thick out of the can, a little 333 brushing liquid helps it flow out better when you're working flat surfaces. Read the instructions carefully. Luckily, it sands easily (220 or 320 grit) so you can clean up and try again until you get it right. Virtually no nasty solvent smell, except a little from the 333. I worked in my basement shop, with an exhaust fan set up in an open window, drawing in through an A/C filter to provide non-dusty positive air pressure. Foam brushes work pretty well, once you get the hang of how much to load it up. Wrap in foil to keep them usable for a few days till you get to the next coat. I used most of this pint to refinish a 18x36 inch cockpit table. Two coats, sand lightly; two more, sand; then two finish coats. Sanding isn't needed for adhesion unless you let it harden a month between coats, it's just to level out the grain bumps that telegraph through the finish.
