The bend in this spade makes it more difficult to get leverage. Didn't work for what I needed.

Great garden shovel with all steel fittings and wood handle. I had one of those plastic top handled ones. It broke and the sharp edges cut my arm and leg. Great on time shipping by The AMES Companies, Inc. Was here on my porch in 3-4 days.also might the one at L o w e s might work.

A good solid shank, heavy duty spade. However, the most important part, the solid shank spade head, is stamped with "India". The whole point with Made In The USA is that the steel is superior to anything other than German or Swiss. To be fair, the product description as advertised made no mention of any country of manufacture or origin. Having purchase before and read up on the manufacturers website, I was lulled into assuming it was a USA product. I feel a bit duped. Hope the spade holds up and lasts. The pricing is the same as for the old USA manufactured ones which is very dear. Bit of a jip I feel. I'm somewhat disappointed. The current trend to outsource everything, claim it's to the same specs and all is really getting to be a bunch of sneaky rip-off B.S. If you can't visually confirm "USA" on the actual product (not just the sticker or package that could be printed in USA) then it's likely NOT MADE IN THE U.S.A.

Ames Pony Garden spades are the top of the line. I worked as a contract tree-digger for a number of years, and I can tell you these spades are perfectly balanced and nearly indestructable. The force we would apply to these spades as a matter of course would destroy an ordinary spade in hours. If you do hard digging, get an Ames Pony!
