Overall this hammer will do what you need it to do. The hammer has a nice sturdy weight to it and the handle has a good grip and comfortable. My problem is that it looked like it was heavily used, with scratches and dents all over it.

The total weight of this hammer is more than 32 ounces, which is on the heavy side for rock hammers. (Geology hammer if we are being persnickety.) All day in the field, this hammer will take a toll on your arm and hand. Here’s what’s bad. The finish is crude on both the metal and on the handle. My sample arrived with a nick on the handle and lots of black smudges. Only the hammer face is polished. The rest of the metal has a rough finish with a black coating. I’m suspicious of the handle. But I’m suspicious of all squishy handles. They sometimes come off, and mostly you don’t want that to happen. Here’s what’s good. It works just fine. The chisel shape of the pointy end gives you some control over how a rock will split. Note that the seller indicates in big letters that sharpening will be needed. My experimental rock was soft. Harder rocks will dull the tip and could cause the tip to chip off.Five stars for occasional use and for a beginner. This is a good hammer for those uses. Not very expensive. If using a rock hammer is frequent, you need to look to the more expensive hammers.
