I’m a professional Japanese calligrapher and Sumi-E artist. This Shikishi board is created with paper that is hardly observe ink, it’s not made with Xuan paper (Gasen-shi) nor Washi paper that we use in Sumi-E and Japanese calligraphy. It might be great for signing signatures and writing messages with permanent markers, but it is definitely not suitable for painting Sumi-E. It’s not so bad to write Japanese calligraphy, just it doesn’t create characteristics of Japanese calligraphy very well. I hope this information will be helpful for any artists who are considering buying Shikishi boards.
