This was my first kit build. I've disassembled and upgrade a few guitars but never painted one. I decided when building this that I wanted to upgrade parts from the start. In the end, the pickguard, body, and neck are all that remains of the original kit. A few things I learned along the way; even though it's obviously a Jazzmaster inspired guitar, it's not exactly the same. I had ordered a white pickguard and it was quite different. I could have modified it but I actually ended up preferring the one that came with the kit.Modifications made:- I used a router to open up the control cavity to make way for larger pots and switch.- I added a tele style output jack because I used the third hole for a second tone knob.- I changed the tremelo plate to a Fender with locking switch. This needed me to enlarge the cavity and drill new mounting holes.- I changed the bridge to a Jazzmaster bridge. The kit came predrilled for a tune-o-matic style bridge. The holes were a bit larger than the Jazzmaster style. I plugged the holes with dowels and drilled new ones.- I put Oripure p90 pickups in it.- I chaged the nut with a bone nut.- Replaced the tuners with 2-pin Fender staggard locking tuners. I had to drill the holes for the pins.- My son wanted to make up a logo for it so we made a waterslide sticker for it- I followed the same procedure and used the same products as the StewMac painting videos. (2 coats of Colortone vinyl sealer, 3 coats of Sonic Blue nitrocillulose, and 15 coats of Colortone Clear Gloss nitrocellulose. Sanded to 5000 grit then polished with a DA polisher using Colortone polishing compounds)Other than having to open up the cavities for the larger parts, the most challenging part was the finish. I kept burning thru the clear and color when trying to final sand/polish. You have to let the laquer cure for atleast two weeks so it's not a fast process. The first time IU polished it, you could still see quite a few scratches in it. I bought an HVLP gun and will be trying to learn that for the next guitar. I may eventually dissasemble this one and try re-doing the finish but for now, I'm happy with it and is sounds/plays great! It might seem strange that I rate this 5-stars while changing so much but remember this is a kit. I made it personal to me and the bones of this kit were great. I know I could have purchased a finished guitar for less but I really enjoyed the process. It was easy to work on and came with all the parts needed to build it without upgrades. I am going to build a Bass next and I will buy from this same company.
