Connected to the optical out from my smart TV. I have a Netgear WiFi receiver for the internet for the TV. Not sure if it is the Netgear device or the sound quality from the TV, but sound is terrible. With that said, I have a Roku box also. Music, YouTube videos all sound great.Device has worked perfectly so far. Hope to get long life out of it. Will update in 6 months or so, or if there is a change in performance.

This product works great and was super easy to install. I am not techie by any means, so if I could install it, anyone can. I was looking for a way to get a little more life out of a 2005 Yamaha Dolby Digital receiver and speakers connected to it. I purchased a new Sony 4K HDTV and it only has an HDMI or optical audio out, not a place for L/R RCA audio outputs from the receiver. This little device allows me to use my old, digital sound system for a bit longer until I decide what to do next. You simply plug the L/R RCA cable into one side of the device, the optical cable (or coax cable) into the other side of the device and it into the new HDTV audio out location. There is a small switch on the side of this device that you have to select either optical or coax output. All of your components need to be powered off while this device is being installed. After all the outputs are attached correctly, plug it in, turn on your system and then ensure that the HDTV audio is set to external speakers vs the built in speaker. Works great and now there is no rush to figure out a new sound system.

The unit initially worked fine upon hookup. I basically only got it hooked up and tested and a week or so later I tried to use it and it would not work. The power light was illuminated but my TV Ears Sennheiser model TR120 no longer seemed to receive any signal. I subsequently hooked up analog to my TV ears unit and it worked fine. I only had one optical audio cable so I suppose the new cable might have gone bad. The unit was fine for my initial usage...no perceived delay in sound etc.

re:J-Tech Digital ® Optical SPDIF Toslink / Coaxial Digital to Analog Audio Decoder Converter with PCM , 5.1 Dolby Digital & DTS Support with 3.5mm Jack $39.99I originally bought a different device to attempt what I wanted. It didn't work. I posted an unhappy review because Amazon didn't allow me to contact the seller, J-Tech, directly. J-Tech contacted me and made things all good by selling me 2 pieces equipment (including this item) and refunding on that item.I wanted to easily switch from louder evening 5.1 surround sound to night-time headphones listening. The alternate paths go to my 5.1 DTS system and to my headphones. I wanted my solution to split off and downmix to stereo the 5.1 optical signal from my TV. This is part of a great solution. As an example, I really love the sound of the Pitch Perfect 2 movie ending where the Bellas are competing at the world a capella championships. Using this device outputting to my stereo headphones, I hear all of the surround channels. A wrong solution let me only hear the LF and RF channels, missing the vital center channel sound. The output optical and stereo signals are just about simultaneous so a hard-of-hearing person can listen to the same program on headphones (even on bluetooth headphones with an added bluetooth transmitter) without making the stereo system blast everybody else out.If you want to simultaneously output 5.1 surround sound and stereo sound, you need the following JTech solution (both pieces):1) J-Tech Digital ® Optical SPDIF Toslink / Coaxial Digital to Analog Audio Decoder Converter with PCM , 5.1 Dolby Digital & DTS Support with 3.5mm Jack $39.992) J-Tech Digital ® Premium Quality SPDIF TOSLINK Digital Optical Audio 1x3 Splitter (One Input 3 Outputs) $28.99

It works okay, but... I wouldn't recommend it for use with headphones, which is a shame considering this is the only decent optical audio converter I could find for a reasonable price.THERE IS NOISE created by this box as is standard with most cheap audio equipment, however, the way this works is by cutting off the audio completely when there isn't any sound playing. This means you'll only hear the static when the volume of something is really low, like music fading in or out, or for about a full second after everything goes quiet, and even the smallest amount of ambient noise you can't even hear will keep it on. This isn't really a problem with speakers, but with my headphone amp it's noticeable. Also, every time the audio is cut off it creates an ANNOYING little pop like when you flip a switch to cut something off that your headphones are plugged into. When playing a game or watching a movie this isn't really a problem, but when I was browsing a menu every time I hit a button and there was a *click* sound as the menu scrolled, the sound would play, there would be about a second of hiss, and then a little pop and everything would go silent, and it is extremely annoying to me, someone used to crystal clear audio through a wireless headset or even through the TV's speakers.ALSO, there IS a high-pitched whine like in most cheap audio equipment, but I can only hear it when I turn my amp up louder than I ever would for listening. Also, I have good hearing, so I can even hear it just enough to give me a headache when I have the sound turned up just to the level of being loud but not painful when everything goes silent, but if movie or game is making sound, or if I turn down the volume to a moderate listening level then you can't hear the whine.Ultimately it's just that when you're doing something quiet it can be annoying and ruin the atmosphere, but for most applications this will work fine. Again, my complaints are mainly for use with a headphone amp.An added plus would be that the volume out of this box is really loud, so you won't have to amplify the signal as much as you usually might which keeps down the static from this box and an amp.I don't think I will return it just because I can't find anything better to replace this with.Side note: it works fine with an HDMI switch or matrix (at least the one I have) which some devices have trouble doing, although this is optical, so it doesn't actually connect to anything, so I guess it would be surprising if there was a problem...
