The purchase of this bicycle was the proverbial pig in a poke. With no real reviews to rely upon at the time of purchase, yet, desperate enough to try and find a specific set of criteria on a folding bike, I took a chance and ordered the Kabon folding bicycle for my wife. We own 5 Dahon folding bicycles, which we have used extensively for commuting and traveling over the past 16 years here in the USA and in other parts of the world. Brompton also builds a great bicycle as well, but the price is roughly double the cost of the Dahon bikes and delivers roughly the same performance across the board. Dahon has continuously improved certain features on their bicycles, remaining firmly committed to improving their products. So why switch? A lighter weight frame with disk brakes and a competitive price looked attractive. The ride quality of the Kabon is very good. The stiffness of the frame, including the joints are stiffer than most folding bikes, thus, providing a solid feel while standing on the pedals and cranking uphill. The wheelbase and position of the seat and one’s center of gravity are well situated, such that even during hard braking, the bike feels solid and predictable. Beware, the disk brakes are quite effective and capable of throwing one over the handle bars if the rider is not mindful of the physics.I was pleasantly surprised with many aspects and features the Kabon bike. The folding features are reasonably well thought out. The folding direction of the handlebar stem is a bit awkward, but the folding mechanisms of the handlebar stem and main frame are of a new design and work quite well. The overall quality of the bike frame and the components ranges from good to excellent. The only area that is really cheap are the tires, but these are replaced easily enough. The disk brakes are quite effective in all types of weather. After adding pedals, the bike we received weighed in at slightly over 22 lbs..The bike is setup for people shorter than 6 feet. My 6’ 3” height is too tall and there is not enough range in the seat post height to comfortably accommodate me. The custom shaped seat post appears unique to Kabon and is the only thing keeping me from ordering a second bike for myself. It should also be noted the seat post circumference and shape make it challenging to find tail lights which easily mount to it. Most of the removable tail lights have flexible strap lengths which are too short to wrap around the circumference of the post.Life in the Seattle area requires adapting to the rain 9 months out of the year. We added fenders to improve the versatility of the bike for inclement weather, along with lights. There are threaded inserts with fasteners at numerous locations which help support the installation of fenders, but there are a couple of locations where fasteners/inserts would significantly improve the installation. Currently, the forward fender relies on a single bolt without a clean method of providing stays from the lower front fork to support the aft end of the forward fender. There is also no center fastener/insert aft of the bottom bracket to secure the forward end of the aft fender. In my opinion, the technology, design and quality of this folding bike currently makes it an excellent choice with good value. There is still room for improvement, like providing a taller seat post option and adding additional fasteners/inserts at key locations to support fenders and attachments. I think this is one of the best folding bike of its kind currently available on the market.
