Handmade Lokta Paper - The World's Most Unique Handmade Paper

A Special Tradition - Following a handmade paper-making tradition of over 1,000 years in Nepal, these envelopes made to fit 4x6 inserts feature beautiful bougainvillea petals and titepati leaves added during the creation of the paper.

Sustainable Paper - The paper is made from Lokta bushes which grow in the Himalayan mountains of Nepal. When cut, this tree-free bush grows back quickly, making it a sustainable source for the paper. The fibrous inner-bark is cooked into a wet mash and then spread by hand across boxed screens. The paper forms as it dries and hardens in the Himalayan sunshine.

A Beautifully Unique Texture - Lokta paper has a unique texture with one side showing the intricate pattern from the screen used to create the paper, and the other side, called the sun-kissed side, shows a more natural and varied texture. Lokta paper has a fabric-like feel making it a special choice for invitations, thank-you notes, or other special greetings.

Go Natural - The paper contains natural flecks from the lokta bark which add to its character, making each envelope unique. Kathmandu Valley Co. paper is 100% lokta. Give your project a taste of nature and a beautiful handmade touch.

Handmade Sustainable Lokta Paper from Nepal

Thank you for Supporting a 1,000-year-old Paper-making Tradition

The oldest surviving Lokta paper is a copy of the Karanya Buha Sutra Buddhist text, estimated to be 1,000 to 1,900 years old.

Lokta Paper is still used today for official Nepali government documents and has been produced in a similar fashion for centuries.

Thank you for being a part of a tradition that spans over 1,000 years of handmade paper making in Nepal.
