Finally a cage here that is actually a decent size for a rat. My girl loves it. I had her in a small one and surrounded by a gate. Even at the pet stores, there was limited choices. I absolutely love thos cage, colour and it was super easy to set up.

My baby rats have been in this cage for three weeks now and we're very happy with it.The base is nice and deep so I can add a good layer of litter plus shredded paper. The rats love digging in it and they aren't kicking litter out onto my floor. The shelves are a little fussy to install but are a good size and very sturdy. The ramps easy to use and sturdy but not entirely necessary. After the first week we removed two of the ramps. We just keep the one between the top two shelves which are almost at the same height and the ramp has become another shelf.Based on other reviews I used zip ties to keep the corners together. I don't think it was entirely necessary as I don't think the rats could really get through the gap. However, placing zip ties at the bottom of the corners makes cleaning the cage easier. The first time we removed the cage from the base the cage started to come apart. Adding the zip ties keeps the cage together which speeds up cleaning.Having two doors to the cage makes it easy to add food and add accessories to the cage.Overall I'd say this is a good buy.

For the price, this is a really good cage. I've had it for almost a year and I would still make this decision.Size:It's hard to find this medium size cage-- usually rodent housing is either too tiny for a pair of rats or is a huge habitat with wide bar spacing that takes up a big corner of a room. This is a perfect in-between. It's ideal for a pair of rats who need space to run and climb, but it also fits comfortably on top of my bookcase, so I didn't have to rearrange a whole room.Quality:I had started with the Kaytee "my first home for pet rat" version of this (the white cage with a black shelf) and the quality of that product is much higher than this one. These bars are rather flexible, with gaps, and I zip-tied the corners like other reviewers suggested.Although I preferred the white powder-coated bars aesthetically, these bars are also coated (grey) and hold up well to the occasional boredom chew when my doe is trying to get my attention. My rats are not escape artists or into chewing plastic. Although they have taken some big chunks out of the shelves and an upper corner of the base, this is just from regular gnawing. The plastic is not particularly thick, though, so it might not take long for the motivated rodent to find his way out.It isn't the highest quality cage out there. The cage walls do not properly lock onto the base, at least on mine. I tried bending the tabs with pliers but now I just use zip ties to keep them attached. This means I have to cut the zip ties and put new ones on every week when I clean it.Cleaning:The relative flexibility of the bars does make removing/installing the shelves slightly difficult (more so than the "my first home for pet rat" edition). I also had trouble attaching the ramps at the very first assembly, but they have gotten easier over time. [an update: one of the ramps has broken. I just don't use a ramp with the bottom shelf now.]To be honest, I probably spend two hours deep-cleaning this cage, which I do weekly. That includes everything inside (litter box, two space pods, one igloo, hammocks, towels, fleece liner). I think disassembling and reassembling everything takes a little longer than I would like.I saw some complaints about the little indent along the borders of the shelves. This collects waste, which to me is a good thing because it means that no unsanitary matter is getting kicked out onto my floor. (This has occasionally happened, but very rarely.) The plastic of the shelves and base is easy to wash.I do appreciate the depth of the base as well. That is hard to find, especially with the more common all-metal cages. This way, toys and food don't get flung out.Other attributes:Bar spacing: 1/4" or 3/8", horizontal. My doe is a bit of a runt (full grown ~300g) and I think she could possibly fit herself through 1" bar spacing, so the closeness of these bars is really important to me. Also, my rats climb from place to place just as much as they use the ramp, so I do appreciate that the horizontal bars work as little ladders for them.Plastic ramps and shelves: easy to clean, no grates or barred surfaces to encourage bumblefoot or other foot injuries, no need for fleece shelf covers (although you could add those if you want), easy transportation between levels. I can throw it all for a soak in the bathtub when I need to.Overall I'm satisfied with this product, and would recommend it despite its flaws. My rats love having space to bounce around and play, and it's easy to customize with lava ledges and other fun perches and hangouts.

Overall a good cage. The "Exotics" one is big enough for 2-3 rats and my 2 girls love it. It did come missing a ramp, but luckily their last cage was a Kaytee so I had a spare. Some of the bars were a bit warped from shipping but nothing that would allow them to escape. My only complaint is that it is very annoying to put together, but once its together it's sturdy. Roomy and very nice! Cages this size can go for like $200 for getting one for $150 is very nice. Highly recommend.

I have a 6 month old female rat, i bought this cage, and it fits her needs great. lots of space, the bars ARE NOT wide enough for her to fit through, there is no way she could escape from this cage as long as it is closed properly. Easy to put together, light, and practical. I've decorated mine with fleece attached with velcro on the platforms for comfort. And since you can place the platforms any level i was able to fit her wheel and potty in there no problem. I recommend this cage for rats for sure, 2 rats would live comfortably, 3 would be pushing it. I believe the price is fair for the product.

I love it, except to clean it was a kind of a PITA, until I figured out how to do it...I now just put the whole wire part in the shower with out bending it and wash the bottom in the kitchen sink..(My shower isnt large enough to clean the whole cage in it)....I use vinegar which wont harm anything or the hammies....So I spot clean. change the bottom weekly and tear the whole thing apart once a month...My hamster Lucy, (Syrian or Teddy Bear) loves it...I originally posted that I thought whatever was in the plastic to avoid germs was possibly making my hammies sick....I apologize for making people worry!..It was just a theory. My last Hammie, Peaches, and my recent one, Lucy, started waking up later, stopped eating and never wanted to come out anymore, and her wheel activity dwindled to nothing. I have researched this and its actually quite common for many reasons. I spoke with the manufacturer and they assured me their products are nontoxic, which makes sense or they would be out of business quickly! They even looked to see if they have had any complaints, and even called me back.Im concluding that Peaches was older and she ended up being sick...(as she lost weight, they found a lump in her privates and we put her to sleep so she wouldnt suffer anymore)...my new one, who is about a year is hibernating due to the cooler weather. I noticed once I opened the windows, this started. (Im in Florida so its not COLD, just getting cooler)..I have always had plastic enclosed cages before so this is new to me...I have no where to put the cage so its warm and enclosed so I am covering it with blankets and am trying to warm her up...I no longer use cedar or pine bedding, but the natural stuff, as a precaution. I just checked her since she was drinking and she may even have wet tail...It wasnt wet the other night, so now maybe its showing itself? Shes going to the vet monday! If anyone has any other suggestions, please send me a message! Otherwise the cage is great!

My Teddy Bear hamster is now living like a kingpin. This cage is boss, first of all; It's really sturdy and the bottom plastic piece is 5 or 6 inches high which gives a lot of protection from your critter kicking out shavings. It also provides a darkened space for him/her to chill in when they aren't on the higher levels. The cage was not all bent up like other cages I've tried and it fit very snuggly into the plastic bottom as it's supposed to. The machining was done really well. The shelves are high quality plastic and they form a bit of a dish on each level so that seeds or any other items on those shelves will not just roll off. This cage is HUGE. I'll post a picture to show but it is gigantic. My teddy bear hamster gets crazy on it; running up and down the ladders, climbing up the bars, jumping from 3 stories, etc... he loves it and it does exactly what I wanted it to do which was give him more play room and exercise. Hamsters love to climb and it's great exercise. There is tons of pull-up and climbing activities for this hamster. He totally ignores the wheel now.Did I mention this cage is huge? Part of that definition is that this cage is also very tall. I was worried about my hamster jumping to his death it' so tall but the plastic ladder slides are very wide and end up covering most of the open space so that if he did slip or misread a jump he won't fall that far... plus I know he'll be strong and muscular enough where he won't get hurt... at least while he's young. This cage would easily fit 2 large rats or a chinchilla, farret, weezle, etc... with plenty of room to spare. If you want to spoil your critter with the pimpest, bossest cage in the neighborhood then look no further.
